No. 21 Northeastern dominated James Madison, turning four Dukes’ turnovers into 24 points, in a comfortable 41-24 win on Saturday at Bridgeforth Stadium in Harrisonburg, Va. to end the regular season for both teams. The Huskies (8-4, 6-3 Atlantic 10) will now await the NCAA Div. IAA selection show on Sunday at 1 p.m. (NESN) to see if they will receive one of the eight at-large invitations to the 16-team postseason field.
The Huskies ran out to a quick 17-0 lead and never looked back against the Dukes (6-6, 4-5 A10). Senior Tim Gale had another great game for NU, rushing 20 times for 140 yards to become just the third Husky ever to top 1000 yards in a season (1061). Shawn Brady was an efficient 14-16 (87.5 percent, the highest ever in a game by an NU quarterback with at least 10 attempts) for 168 yards and a pair of touchdowns, both to freshman Shane Hopkins. Cory Parks finished with six catches for 79 yards and Quintin Mitchell had four for 66, while adding a four-yard TD run on a reverse.
Up 24-10 at intermission, the Huskies quickly made it a wide cushion, taking the kickoff to start the second half and going 65 yards in nine plays and scoring when Mitchell sneaked in from four yards out on a reverse play with 10:06 left in the third quarter. After the teams traded punts, JMU hurt its cause when Alvin Banks caught a pass only to fumble when hit by Jeremiah Mason. Gene Rich recovered for NU at the Dukes’ 38 and Brady found Parks for a 36-yard play to the 2-yard line on the Huskies’ first play of the drive. Gale bulled in from two yards out and Kesic added the extra point for a 38-10 lead with 2:30 left in the third quarter.
The Dukes served up another score on their next drive when JMU quarterback Matt LeZotte threw it right to NU linebacker Jamil Young, who raced the ball all the way to the Dukes’ 3-yard line. JMU held, but Kesic made a 23-yard field goal on the first play of the fourth quarter for a 41-10 lead. The Dukes scored twice in garbage time as the Huskies took out their first string defense.
JMU’s problems started early on. After the Dukes punted on their first possession, the Huskies moved 69 yards on eight plays and went up 3-0 on a 40-yard field goal by Kesic with 9:08 left in the first quarter. JMU was forced to punt again and the Huskies had little trouble moving the ball, going 74 yards in 13 plays and taking a 10-0 lead when Brady faked a handoff and hit Hopkins out of the backfield on a short 1-yard pass with 1:53 left in the opening quarter. JMU fumbled the ensuing kickoff and the Huskies took it in four plays later when Peter Harris used second-effort to surge in from two yards out on the first play of the second quarter. Kesic added the extra point and the rout was on.
The Dukes managed to get a TD back and then picked off Brady at the JMU 11. But, Mason ended any threat by picking off LeZotte, who airmailed his target right to the NU cornerback, who returned it to the Dukes’ 27. That set up another Brady to Hopkins scoring pass as the Huskies ran the exact same play for another 1-yard score and a 24-7 edge with 3:22 to go in the half. JMU made it 24-10 at intermission on a 20-yard field goal by David Rabil.
NU is now 5-5 all-time at JMU, their finest road record against any team in the A10.
