Sophomore receiver Cory Parks set a new Northeastern game record with 246 receiving yards on seven catches, including three touchdowns, to lead the Huskies to a 51-0 blowout of Albany at Parsons Field on Saturday.
Coming off a record-setting 78-6 win over Stonehill in the season opener, NU (2-0) was expecting a tighter game against the defending Northeast Conference champs. But like Stonehill, the Great Danes were clearly overmatched from the start against Div. IAA’s sixth-ranked team. The Huskies built a 21-0 first-quarter lead and never looked back in recording the shutout.
Junior quarterback Shawn Brady finished 10-14 with a career-high 264 yards and four touchdowns, three to Parks on plays of 10, 69 and 62 yards. Sophomore running back Anthony Riley ran for his second straight 100-yard game with 108 yards on 16 carries. Junior linebacker Liam Ezekiel led the NU defense with 15 tackles.
NU head coach Don Brown was impressed with his team's performance. "I thought our offense came out strong leading the way," he said. "Obviously Cory [Parks] had a huge day with seven catches for 246. We threw the ball when we wanted to and where we wanted to."
Albany came out and looked as though it would live up to its billing as a formidable IAA opponent, picking up a pair of first downs on its opening series. But, a big hit by Gavin Potter on Albany quarterback Uli Delgado forced a fumble that James Abosi recovered for the Huskies at the NU 41. Brady then capped a 59-yard TD drive with a 5-yard TD pass to Quintin Mitchell as the Huskies capitalized on the Albany turnover for a 7-0 lead with 8:22 left in the first quarter.
Anthony Nolen picked off Delgado on the second play of Albany’s ensuing series, returning the interception to the Great Dane 10 and setting up another NU TD on the next play. Brady found Parks all alone in the endzone as the Huskies went up 14-0 midway through the opening quarter. The Great Danes continued to have their problems as Abosi forced backup QB Anthony Sciarra to fumble in NU territory. Again, the Huskies were opportunistic, marching 68 yards in nine plays and going up 21-0 when Tim Gale bulled in from two yards out with 28 seconds to go in the first quarter.
"We thought we were going to have our hands full and they certainly moved it on us early and had us confused with their multiple formations," Brown said. "They did a pretty good job stopping our run game early. But we ran well enough though that our play action really hurt them and we were able to really get it going."
The second quarter was more of the same. After an Albany punt was downed at the NU 24, Riley ran for seven yards before Brady hooked up with Parks on a 69-yard scoring play to put the Huskies up 28-0 just 1:08 into the second quarter. The rout was officially on and Miro Kesic added to the bulge by connecting on field goals of 35 and 30 yards for a 34-0 NU halftime edge.
The Huskies struck quickly after intermission. On the fifth play of their series, Brady found Parks for a nifty 62-yard TD and a 41-0 cushion with 12:44 left in the third quarter. The Huskies continued to squelch their canine counterparts and added to the advantage when freshman sensation Shawnn Gyles had 36 yards on five straight carries, capped by a 5-yard TD run to put the Huskies up 48-0 with 2:46 to go in the third quarter. Kesic later added a 37-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to complete the scoring.
NU’s total of 129 points in the first two weeks is the team’s most ever in consecutive games. The Huskies, who had a school-record 745 yards of total offense in week one, rolled up 576 (312 on the ground) against Albany.
"The next 10 weeks we have Harvard and nine Atlantic 10 games, so there's no rest the rest of the way," Brown said. "To be honest, we should be 2-0 with the teams that we've played. But it's easy to say that and hard to do that. I'm just glad with the way that we handled the first two games."
The Huskies return to action next Saturday, Sept. 13, at Rhode Island for their first Atlantic 10 game of the season.
