Northeastern trailed 24-21 at the half and 31-28 midway through the third quarter, but rallied for a 42-39 win at Rhode Island on Saturday at Meade Stadium in the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams.
It was a wild game with four lead changes and the teams combining for 1036 yards of offense. NU got great performances from sophomore Anthony Riley (third straight 100-yard game with 132 on 20 rushes), Peter Harris (118 yards, two touchdowns) and Cory Parks (131 receiving yards, one TD). Shawn Brady completed 8-18 for 203 yards and a pair of scores.
Husky fans were thinking deja vu when Rhode Island took over at its own 1-yard line, down by three, with 1:33 left to play. In NU's last visit to Kingston, in the 2001 season finale, the Huskies led 26-21 until the Rams marched for the winning points of a 27-26 decision with just 24 seconds left. The Huskies, ranked fifth in the current Sports Network Div. IAA poll, would have no letdown this time as they are off to a 3-0 start for the second straight season (the first time NU has started 3-0 in consecutive years).
With the Huskies up 42-39 early in the fourth quarter, NU went on a 16-play drive that consumed 10:01 of the clock. Tim Gale had two chances to punch it in for some insurance points, but he was stopped for a yard loss at the URI 2-yard line on a third-down play and then halted again on a fourth-down attempt.
The Rams took over at their own 1-yard line needing to get into field goal range for All-Conference kicker Shane Laisle, but with only 1:33 and one timeout to do it. URI hurt its cause with three penalties on its final drive and could not advance the ball past midfield. QB Jayson Davis tried a Hail Mary pass from the Ram 46-yard line with five seconds left that NU's Rold Louis picked off to end the game.
The Huskies, who entered the game coming off blowouts of Stonehill and Albany, came right out and took control. NU stuffed the Rams on their opening drive and needed just four plays to take the lead as Harris scored from 26 yards out after making a nifty spin move in mid run to put the Huskies up 7-0.
But, as it would be all afternoon, URI answered right back. Jason Ham (136 yards, two TDs) busted a 64-yard run on URI's third play of its next drive, tying the game 7-7 with 9:32 left in the first quarter. After the teams traded punts and NU had a series end on downs at the Rhody 30, Davis coughed the ball up on a bad exchange and Louis recovered for the Huskies at the URI 42. On the next play, Brady found an open Parks for a 42-yard TD play and a 14-7 lead.
URI, which gave the Huskies problems with its option attack all afternoon, pieced together a 10-play, 79-yard drive capped by a Luther Green five-yard run to tie the game 14-14 early in the second quarter. Brady and NU kept the fireworks going as the junior QB hit Quintin Mitchell for a 45-yard TD pass to reclaim the lead with 11:47 left in the half. Again, URI answered and marched down the field, tying the game when Green scored from two yards out on a fourth-down play.
Green had another big play on URI's next series, pulling in a 30-yard catch from Davis and helping set up a 38-yard Laisle field goal with 13 seconds left that gave Rhody its 24-21 halftime lead.
NU got the ball to start the second half and wasted no time reclaiming the lead. Brady hit Parks for a 29-yard gain, and Riley got loose on a 43-yard scamper to the URI 3-yard line. Two plays later, Riley was in the endzone. Miro Kesic added the point-after for a 28-24 NU edge with 13:15 left in the third quarter. The Rams continued to confuse the Huskies with their option offense and needed just five plays to move 76 yards and take the lead back. The key play of the drive was a 29-yard run to the NU 7-yard line by Davis on a fourth-and-12 attempt. Ham rammed it in and URI went up 31-28.
The Huskies then went three plays and out, with Rhody taking over at its own 40 and starting to move the ball again. Davis led the Rams to a first down at the NU 17 before he had a pass picked off by Anthony Nolen at the 2-yard line, ending the threat. The Huskies then took the lead for good, using an eight-play, 98-yard drive. The key plays were a 28-yard run by Riley and a 41-yard pass from Brady to Parks that set up the Huskies at the URI 15. Brady then escaped two Rhody tacklers in the backfield and sprinted 15 yards for the go-ahead points with 1:54 left in the third quarter.
NU added to its cushion after Davis fumbled at his own 33. Riley ran three times for 14 yards and then Harris broke away for a 19-yard TD run as the Huskies went up 42-31 with 13:04 left in the game. URI had a quick response as on its third play of the ensuing drive, Davis found a huge opening up the middle on a third-down play and sprinted 71 yards to make it a 42-37 game. Wendall Williams ran for the two-point conversion to create a slim three-point deficit.
That's when NU had the most critical drive of the game, eating up 10:01 on the clock, despite not producing any points. The Huskies converted three third-down plays on the drive, none bigger than a third-and-nine pass from Brady to Parks for a first-and-goal at the Ram 10.
The total of 39 points was the most allowed by NU since the 2001 season opener against Hofstra in a 45-21 defeat. The Huskies had never allowed more points and still won the game. The most points NU had ever surrendered and still won was 34-33 against Bucknell on Sept. 22, 1994.
The Huskies return home for next Saturday's game against William & Mary.
