The Northeastern football team used a 31-point, second-half scoring outburst to remain perfect this season with a 48-14 win over William & Mary on Saturday afternoon in front of 4921 fans at Parsons Field.
The defending Atlantic 10 champion Huskies (ranked fourth in the latest Sports Network Div. IAA poll) improve to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in A10 play, while the Tribe falls to 1-2, 0-1.
The home team outgained W&M 513 to 281 and outrushed its opponent 366-106. Time of possession was 37:05 to 22:55 in NU’s favor. Peter Harris finished the game with a career-high 123 yards on 14 carries, while fellow senior Tim Gale rushed 15 times for 84 yards, and sophomore Anthony Riley had 42 yards on 10 carries. Harris’s previous high was 118, which he set last week against Rhode Island.
“It’s hard for a defense to gear up for three great running backs, and the line is creating holes big enough for a truck to get through,” said NU quarterback Shawn Brady, who also added that freshman Shawnn Gyles ( 84 yards on 12 carries in the fourth quarter), has provided the backfield with further depth.
Northeastern has now outscored its opponents 219-59 this season. The Huskies extended their school-record string of games in which they have scored 40 or more points to four.
With NU leading 17-6, William & Mary opened the second-half scoring with a nine-yard touchdown pass from Lang Campbell to Danny Wade in the back of the endzone. Campbell ran in the two-point conversion to make it 17-14 with 10:54 left in the third quarter.
The Huskies responded with 31 unanswered points to put the game away. Riley scored his second touchdown of the season, as he punched it in from seven yards out with 8:19 left in the third to increase the Husky advantage to 24-14.
With 6:35 left in the third, the Tribe lined up to punt from its 22, but the snap sailed over punter Mike Mesi’s head and through the back of the endzone, making the margin 26-14.
On Northeastern’s ensuing drive, Brady connected with junior Quintin Mitchell on a 34-yard completion, and two plays later Harris jumped into the endzone for a one-yard score. Brady then hit a wide-open Mitchell for the two-point conversion.
“I’m just relying on my line,” Harris said. “We have a good line and good fullbacks. It’s the fundamentals. It’s great that we have running backs by committee and always have fresh legs in the game.”
Senior cornerback Charles Cameron picked off Tribe quarterback Lang Campbell for the second time on the day, this one coming along the far sideline with 3:24 left in the third. On the ensuing drive, the Huskies kept it on the ground, running the ball six straight times, the final rush a six-yard touchdown by freshman Shane Hopkins. Miro Kesic added the extra-point for a commanding 41-14 lead.
“We ran our offense extremely well, and got that pick from Cameron and never looked back,” head coach Don Brown said. “We were able to pound the ball and let the defense rest and gain their composure.”
The Huskies’ next drive turned into the Shawnn Gyles Show, as the freshman sensation rushed eight times for 68 yards, the last seven of which took him into the endzone, making the score 48-14. It was Gyles’ team-leading sixth TD of the season.
“It was a very physical game, and we got worn down in the second half,” said William & Mary head coach Jimmye Laycock. “Their running game is good, and they have a solid offensive line.”
Northeastern took the opening kickoff and moved the ball to the William & Mary 18, but the drive stalled and the Huskies had to settle for a Kesic 36-yard field goal.
The Tribe grabbed a 6-3 lead when, after pinning the Huskies deep in their own territory and getting the ball back at the NU 36, Lang Campbell hooked up with preseason All-American Rich Musinski on a 25-yard scoring strike. W&M botched the PAT thanks to a bad snap. Musinski caught only one more pass the whole game and ended up with just 50 yards.
Gale made it 10-6 just before the end of the first quarter when he scampered in from two yards out, capping a lengthy 15-play, 85-yard march that covered 7:34. In that drive, Gale and Harris each converted third-and-one plays in Tribe territory. The score was Gale’s fourth of the season and gave him 187 career points, moving him into fourth on NU’s career list.
Following a W&M missed 48-yard field goal, the Huskies needed only two plays to go up 17-6. After a 28-yard completion to Mitchell, Harris ripped right through the heart of the Tribe defense and scored on a 41-yard run.
“I can’t say enough about our running game, especially Peter Harris,” Coach Brown said. “We always knew he could play at such a high level. He’s really playing to his potential this season.”
The Huskies thwarted the Tribe’s last two drives of the first half by forcing a pair of turnovers. Cameron had his second career interception, picking off Campbell at the NU 4, with 3:15 left. Senior linebacker Liam Ezekiel then stripped wideout Danny Wade, with junior corner Joe Okrah making the recovery at midfield, as the clocked ran under a minute left in the half. William & Mary coughed up the ball three times in the first 30 minutes of play.
“That’s coaching. We run turnover circuits all the time in practice, trying to strip the ball and recover fumbles,” Ezekiel said.
Northeastern is back in action Saturday, Sept. 27, when it travels to Villanova for a 12:30 p.m. matchup. The Wildcats are ranked fifth in the current Sports Network Div. IAA poll, one spot behind the Huskies. The game can be seen live on CN8.
