In a matchup of two top-10 Div. IAA teams, Northeastern lost for the first time this season, falling 28-7 to Villanova at Villanova Stadium on Saturday.
The Huskies, ranked fourth in the latest Sports Network and ESPN/USA Today polls, were expecting a tough game from No. 5 Villanova and they got it. The Wildcats held the vaunted NU offense to its lowest production of the season (seven points and 247 yards). The Huskies came into the game averaging 393 rushing yards, but were held to only 92 on 34 attempts. NU had not been held to as low a point total since Oct. 20, 2001 in a 7-0 win over Richmond.
NU dropped to 4-1 and 2-1 in the Atlantic 10, while Villanova improved to 4-0, 2-0 in the conference.
After a defensive first quarter, both teams scored in the second quarter and it looked like the game would be tied 7-7 at the half. But, when a Villanova drive stalled at the NU 38-yard line, the Wildcats had time for a final play with six seconds left before intermission. Quarterback Joe Casamento (19-29, 191 yards) rolled out and threw a Hail Mary pass that Terry Butler tipped out of a pack of players, including several Huskies, to Curtis Waltman for a touchdown as time expired. Adam James added the extra point for a 14-7 Villanova halftime lead.
The teams played a scoreless third quarter before NU had a chance to even the game early in the fourth quarter. The Huskies moved into Villanova territory and had a fourth-and-six play from the Villanova 34. The Wildcats blitzed and Peter Harris made a great block to give Shawn Brady time to throw a long pass to Quintin Mitchell, who was pulled down, leading to a pass interference call at the 2-yard line. The Huskies were flagged for holding on the same play, however, so the down had to be replayed. On the second try, Brady’s pass to Mitchell was incomplete and the Huskies turned the ball over on downs.
Villanova responded with a decisive drive for a two-touchdown cushion. The Wildcats moved the ball 66 yards on nine plays, capped by a nine-yard TD run from Butler for a 21-7 edge with 10:25 to go in the game. Butler finished with 107 yards on 21 carries, while backfield mate Moe Gibson ran 15 times for 105 yards.
NU punted on its next possession, but then stopped Villanova and was primed to get the ball back at the seven-minute mark. But, the Huskies were whistled for too many men on the field on fourth down, giving the Wildcats an automatic first down. The Huskies then committed another key penalty when they were hit with a roughing the passing penalty that moved the ball to the NU 35. Two plays later, including a false-start penalty against Villanova, Casamento was in the shotgun and took a high snap before sprinting 36 yards through a big hole for a back-breaking TD and a 28-7 lead with 5:12 left to play.
The Huskies had their chances. NU looked like it was going to take the lead early in the second quarter as the Huskies had a first-and-goal play from the Villanova 6-yard line. But Carmen DeFrancesco hit the ball square out of NU tailback Anthony Riley’s hands and Clarence Curry recovered for the Wildcats at the 4-yard line. Villanova then went 96 yards in nine plays and took a 7-0 edge when Butler went in from 10 yards out at the 8:16 mark of the second quarter. NU tied the game 7-7 with 1:18 left before halftime. The Huskies faced a fourth-and-10 play from the Villanova 37 when they executed a perfect fake punt. Tyler Grogan took the snap and NU’s veteran punter threw a strike to Anthony Nolen for a 19-yard gain and a first down to the 18-yard line. NU got five more yards on a facemask penalty and then Peter Harris busted loose on the next play for a 13-yard touchdown run. Miro Kesic added his 31st straight extra point to make it a 7-7 tie.
Since winning their first-ever Yankee Conference/Atlantic 10 game at Villanova in 1993, the Huskies have now lost five straight game at Villanova Stadium. NU returns to action next week at Harvard.
