Northeastern used a furious fourth-quarter rally but fell short when Harvard’s Matt Fratto recovered on onside kick with one minute left on the clock to preserve the Crimson’s 28-20 victory at Harvard Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The 10th-ranked Huskies received touchdowns from running back Tim Gale and wide receiver Quintin Mitchell over the final 15 minutes, but couldn’t overcome their 28-6 deficit, falling for the second straight game. NU (4-2) has now dropped two straight for the first time since October of 2001. Harvard improved to 3-0.
"I like my football team," said NU coach Don Brown. "My guys came in and played their tails off. I'm excited to go back and coach my guys. We have to go back and get ready to beat Hofstra."
NU trailed Harvard 28-6 after three quarters of play and turned the ball over on its first drive of the fourth when Sean Brady was intercepted by Harvard’s Ben Butler at the HU 22. However, on the ensuing Harvard first down, NU linebacker Liam Ezekiel picked off QB Ryan Fitzpatrick at the HU 39 with 14 minutes remaining.
On the first play from scrimmage, Brady hit Mitchell for a 36-yard gain down to the Harvard 3. The Crimson were whistled for a substitution infraction, resulting in first and goal for the Huskies from one and a half yards out. Gale steamrolled Harvard linebacker Bobby Everett en route to the endzone. Miro Kesic’s kick brought the Huskies within 28-13 with 13:32 remaining in regulation.
The NU defense stopped the Crimson on three plays when Charles Cameron and Gene Rich combined to stop Fitzpatrick on third and 5. After the punt, the Huskies took over at their own 43 with 11:32 left. Gale caught a screen pass, broke a Dante Balestracci arm tackle and galloped 14 yards down to the HU 43. Facing third and 12 at the HU 45, Brady was dropped in the backfield by defensive end Brian Garcia and NU was forced to punt.
The Huskies then forced two more Harvard punts, the second of which Mitchell returned to the NU 34. Mitchell came up big on the ensuing drive catching four passes for 62 yards, including a 23-yard TD catch from Brady with one minute left in the fourth quarter. Kesic added the extra point to make it 28-20 and then tried an onside kick. The ball scooted under Balestracci and was loose momentarily, but Fratto pounced on it and the Crimson ran out the clock.
NU knew things might not go its way after the opening kickoff, when Shawnn Gyles fumbled the return and Harvard’s Robert Balkema recovered at the NU 21. The Crimson wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, driving the 21 yards in five plays and running 1:56 off the clock for seven points. Fitzpatrick ran a QB keeper around the right end and followed fullback Collin Blackburn into the endzone.
"We spotted them seven points right off the bat and that's not a good way to start off a game," Brown said.
The Huskies answered with a Kesic 44-yard field goal with 5:58 left in the first quarter after they couldn’t take advantage of starting field position at their own 42-yard line. Kesic’s kick finished a nine-play, 31 yard drive.
The Crimson scored 14 unanswered points to take a commanding 21-3 halftime advantage. After Harvard converted a fourth and 1 at the Husky 22, Fitzpatrick hit Brian Edwards over the middle for a 16-yard gain down to the NU 6. Fitzpatrick kept the ball on an option play, cut back across the grain and rushed in from six yards out with 3:43 left in the first quarter. Harvard went up 21-3 on a 16-yard pass from Fitzpatrick to Edwards with 1:29 left before the break.
Harvard opened the second half with a turnover, when Fitzpatrick fumbled on a quarterback keeper. NU’s Scott Quimby recovered the ball at the NU 40. On first and 10, Brady went deep to Cory Parks, who drew a pass interference penalty. Brady connected with Parks for a 15-yard pass on the next play down to the HU 30. The Huskies’ drive stalled, but they were rewarded with three points after Kesic booted a 42-yard field goal. NU crept within 21-6 with 10:53 left in the second quarter.
The Northeastern offense struggled to put together a consistent, long drive, while the Crimson had momentum on their side. With 4:37 left in the third quarter, Harvard put the Huskies on the ropes when Fitzpatrick nailed Edwards with a 34-yard touchdown strike to go up 28-6.
"We had so many second and long and third and long downs," Brown said. "That's obviously not a way to win."
NU never got its rushing game going, netting just 91 yards on 37 attempts. Brady set a career high with 47 pass attempts, but only completed 19 with a pair of interceptions. He finished with 241 yards. Fitzpatrick had a big game for Harvard, completing 13-22 for 244 yards and a two TDs. He also ran for 93 yards and two other scores. Edwards had seven catches for 180 yards.
"I think Harvard's very good on defense," Brown said. "They came out and made some good plays. All the credit goes to them. They came out and beat us."
