Northeastern lost its third straight game, falling to previously winless Hofstra 24-14 at Shuart Stadium in Hempstead, N.Y. on Saturday. The Huskies, who entered the game ranked 19th, dropped to 4-3, 2-2 in Atlantic 10 play. Hofstra improved to 1-5, 1-3 in the conference.
Down 17-7, the Huskies had a fourth-and-three play with 5:14 left in the fourth quarter. NU quarterback Shawn Brady threw incomplete to Tim Gale (season-high 107 rushing yards) and it appeared the Huskies’ hopes of a comeback were finished. But, Cole Haley was whistled for roughing the passer, giving NU a first down. Brady then hit Quintin Mitchell for a 13-yard gain and Cory Parks for an 11-yard touchdown. Miro Kesic added the extra point and suddenly the Huskies trailed just 17-14 with 4:58 to go.
On the first play of Hofstra’s ensuing possession, however, Vemba Bukula ran off right tackle and broke a 67-yard touchdown play to give the Pride their insurance points back. Still, NU wasn’t finished. The Huskies marched down the field to the Hofstra 4-yard line and were prepared to make it tight again when Sean Cassidy, in for injured starter Shawn Brady, threw a lofty pass into double coverage that Prentice James picked off and returned 71 yards to put the game away.
Hofstra added to a 10-7 halftime lead with a six-play, 80-yard scoring drive in the third quarter. A key play on the drive came on a third-and-10 play when backup quarterback Andrew English, subbing for injured starter Bobby Seck, threw to Devale Ellis and Anthony Nolen broke up the play. Nolen was whistled for pass interference, though, keeping the drive alive. Three plays later, English threw to Isaac Irby (eight catches, 139 yards) for a 53-yard play to the NU 2-yard line, setting up a TD plunge by Trevor Dimmie with 4:22 left in the third quarter.
The game started much like last year’s NU-Hofstra matchup at Parsons Field when the Huskies fell behind quickly. The Pride jumped out to a 10-0 lead for the second straight season, starting when Chris Onorato made a 27-yard field goal with 3:52 left in the first quarter. NU head coach Don Brown tried all three of his primary running backs – Anthony Riley, Peter Harris and Gale -- in successive series to start the game, all three of the drives ending in punts.
Hofstra started a drive at its own 39 late in the first quarter and got successive big passing plays from QB Seck. He hit Irby on a 33-yard play and then connected with Ricky Bryant for a 26-yard pass to the NU 2-yard line. After the Huskies stuffed Dimmie for a two-yard loss, Seck ran for a four-yard touchdown to put the Pride up 10-0 with 14:55 left in the second quarter.
After the teams traded punts, the Huskies got the ball moving for the first time. Starting at their own 26, the Huskies got 17 yards over two runs from Gale before Brady hit Harris for an 18-yard pass play to the Hofstra 39. Harris then busted loose on a 23-yard run to the 16, and then added eight more yards on a scamper to the Pride 8-yard line. Brady found Shane Hopkins for a six-yard pass and then Gale found the endzone from two yards out to make it a 10-7 game with 7:06 left in the first half. With the score, Gale became the third player in NU history to score 200 career points.
The Huskies had another great scoring chance at the end of the half after Mike Hall picked off Seck and set up NU at the Pride 40 with 2:18 left. But after Gale ran for three yards to the 37, Brady threw an incomplete pass and then was dropped for a five-yard loss to push the Huskies out of field goal range. The Huskies punted and the Pride ran out the first-half clock, taking their 10-7 lead into intermission.
The Huskies return to action next Saturday when they host their annual Homecoming game at Parsons Field against Maine. NU shared the 2002 A10 title with the Black Bears.
