The Huskies (5-3 overall, 3-2 Atlantic 10) were reeling, having suffered consecutive road losses to Villanova, Harvard and Hofstra, while the Black Bears (4-3, 3-2) were coming off a bye.
“A lot of people had given us up for dead,” Head Coach Don Brown said. “We didn’t give up on each other.”
Gale’s 11-yard TD run with 8:07 left in the third quarter gave NU a 17-7 lead. On that drive, one which covered 41 yards on eight plays, Gale converted a fourth-and-one and junior quarterback Shawn Brady completed a 23-pass to sophomore wideout Cory Parks.
That score upped Gale’s school-record rushing TD total to 32, while NU extended its consecutive games streak of having at least one rushing touchdown to 13. Gale also moved into fourth on NU’s career rushing list with 2,326 yards.
Maine responded with a seven-play, 77-yard march, culminating in a Marcus Williams four-yard score. Williams entered the game as the A10’s leading rusher, averaging 122.4 yards per game, but the Husky defense held him to 82 yards on 19 carries.
“Defensively, this was one of the best games we’ve played since I’ve been here,” Brown said. “Considering the magnitude of the situation, it was a monumental effort.”
Neither team was able to do much on its next two possessions. Northeastern started a drive at its own 33 with 11:13 remaining in the game, and five straight rushes – three by Gale, two by senior Peter Harris – got the ball down to the Maine 29. Sophomore Miro Kesic booted a season-long 46-yard field goal to increase the Huskies’ bulge to 20-14.
“That meant they couldn’t play for a field goal. They had to put it in the endzone,” Brown said. “That took a little pressure off us.”
The Husky defense stepped up big from that point on, stopping Maine on four straight drives. The Black Bears never got beyond their own 38 on any of those drives, gaining just 48 yards on their last 22 plays.
NU took a 7-0 lead in the first on Parks’ 13-yard touchdown catch. For Parks, who caught seven balls for 120 yards, it was his seventh receiving touchdown of the season, tying him for seventh on the school’s all-time list. Brady, who was 11-of-19 for 169 yards, also completed a 34-yarder to Parks and a 27-yarder to sophomore Pat Graham on that drive.
Maine QB Don Whitcomb hooked up with tight end Dante Fusco on a 20-yard touchdown with 4:10 left in the second quarter to knot the score at 7-7, but Kesic booted a 20-yard field goal to give NU a 10-7 advantage heading into the intermission. That score was set up by junior Quintin Mitchell’s 70-yard kick return.
Mitchell also had a 30-yard punt return later in the game. He amassed 136 all-purpose in the game.
“Our special teams was outstanding,” Brown said. “With the stats as close as they were, that was the difference for us in the game today.”
Northeastern has a bye next week, then resumes play Saturday, Nov. 1, when it travels to Amherst, Mass., to take on Massachusetts at 12:30 p.m.
