Northeastern jumped out to a 21-7 lead, but No. 4 Massachusetts scored 21 straight points and held on for a 28-24 win Saturday afternoon at McGuirk Stadium in Amherst, Mass.
The loss extends the Huskies’ losing streak in Amherst – one which dates back to 1958 – to 11 games and its losing streak at McGuirk to 10.
Senior tailback Tim Gale gave NU a 21-7 lead on a one-yard touchdown run with 4:48 remaining in the second quarter. It was Gale’s team-leading eighth touchdown of the season and it upped his school-record rushing touchdown total to 33. Gale finished the game with 73 yards on the ground, giving him 2399 for his career, which moves him into third place on NU’s career rushing list. The drive was highlighted by a halfback option pass from senior tailback Peter Harris to junior quarterback Shawn Brady that gave NU (5-4 overall, 3-3 Atlantic 10) a first down at the UMass 2-yard line.
UMass quarterback Jeff Krohn tossed a pair of touchdown passes before the intermission to tie the game at 21-21. He threw a 49-yard strike to Jimmie Howard with 3:52 to go in the half, then hooked up with Jason Peebler for a 46-yard score with 1:15 left. The extra point attempt after the first TD was no good, but Krohn connected with Rich Demers for a two-point conversion after the second TD to knot the score.
In the third quarter, the Husky defense stopped UMass on fourth down at the NU 27, but Harris fumbled on the first play from scrimmage and the Minutemen recovered at the NU 28. Steve Baylark punched it in from seven yards out with 4:39 left in the third, giving UMass (8-1, 6-0 A10) a 28-21 lead.
Sophomore Miro Kesic booted a 29-yard field goal with 8:34 left to play to bring the Huskies to within four at 28-24. The kick was set up by a 34-yard completion from Brady to junior Quintin Mitchell, who led the Huskies with five catches for 115 yards.
NU got the ball back with 3:02 remaining. The Huskies moved the ball to the UMass 29 on a 46-yard pass from Brady to Mitchell and a Gale 12-yard run. Three plays later, including a stuff of Gale that lost two yards, Brady was picked off by Shannon James at the 12 with 1:08 left. With NU having no timeouts, UMass needed just two plays to run out the clock.
Northeastern’s first score was set up by a 40-yard interception return by junior linebacker Liam Ezekiel, which gave the Huskies the ball at the Minutemen 3-yard line. Brady hit sophomore tailback Bobby French on the next play for a three-yard score with 6:47 left in the first to put the Huskies up 7-0. For French, it was his first career touchdown reception, while for Brady, it was his 30th career touchdown pass, tying him with Fred Vallett (1996-99) for fourth on NU’s all-time list. Brady finished 16-27 for 174 yards. His 3627 career passing yards vault him into fourth on NU’s career charts.
Northeastern went up 14-0 with 3:34 to play in the first quarter when, on a third-and-two play from its own 41, sophomore tailback Anthony Riley ripped through the right side of the line and sprinted 59 yards for a touchdown. The run was the longest of Riley’s career.
Krohn’s 15-yard touchdown pass to fullback Demers with 14:19 to go in the half capped a nine-play, 86-yard UMass drive that cut the Husky advantage to 14-7.
Kesic missed a 40-yard field goal attempt after a holder Tyler Grogan handled a low snap on NU’s first drive of the game and had a 43-yarder blocked on the Huskies’ first drive of the second half. The former marked the first time this season Kesic has first missed a field goal of less than 50 yards. Prior to that, he was 8-8 from that range.
Northeastern plays host to No. 2 Delaware next Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
