Northeastern scored 28 points in the third quarter to cement a 42-14 win over Rhode Island on Senior Day Saturday at Parsons Field. James West had a huge game for NU, with 115 rushing yards, 100 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Senior free safety Gavin Potter recovered a fumble and had an interception which both started touchdown drives for NU. URI quarterback Jayson Davis rushed for both of Rhode Island's touchdowns and went 8-for-14 passing for 121 yards.
The Huskies finish the season 5-6 overall and 4-4 in Atlantic 10 play while Rhode Island finishes 4-7 and 2-6.
Northeastern QB Shawn Brady went 12-for-23 passing for 199 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Northeastern gained 266 yards on the ground and 214 yards passing. Rhody rushed for 139 yards and passed for 121.
The Huskies broke out with a pair of touchdowns to start off the third quarter. Marc Thomas got things started off for NU with a 93-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to make it 21-7. After the ensuing kickoff, Thomas made another huge play, forcing a fumble that NU's Bill Monan recovered. That set up Northeastern's second touchdown in just over a minute of the start of the second half when West dashed for a 35 yard touchdown run to give the Huskies a 28-7 lead.
The Huskies stuffed Rhode Island on the Rams' next drive and the Rams punted it back to NU. West came up big again with a 55 yard reception that got it down to the URI 11-yard line. Bobby French took the ball for a six-yard gain, then scored on a five-yard rush. The drive went 66 yards on five plays, concluding with French's run to make it 35-7.
Quintin Mitchell scored NU's final TD when he caught a 29-yard pass from Brady. Shane Hopkins rushed twice for 22 yards to set up the play, which made it 42-7.
Rhode Island notched the final score of the game 3:04 into the fourth quarter. Davis ran it a yard for a touchdown to finish a 70-yard, seven-play drive. That made it 42-14.
Fumbles were the story of the first half as Rhode Island dropped the ball four times for two turnovers and Northeastern fumbled three times and turned it over once. Northeastern converted on six of 10 third downs in the first half, while holding URI to just one of six. The Huskies out-gained the Rams 241-185 in the half, including 80 rushing yards by West.
Rhode Island's first scoring drive of the game began as URI's Anthony Offord fumbled a Jared White punt. He recovered it and URI started on NU's 49-yard line. Ram running back James Hill then took the ball all the way to the end zone, but the play was negated by a holding call. URI recovered its momentum, however, and took the ball in again. Calvin Poole caught a pass from Davis and made it to the two-yard-line. Two plays later, Davis ran the ball one yard to give URI a 7-0 lead 6:55 into the game. The drive went 49 yards on five plays.
The Huskies got on the board on a 19-yard touchdown run by James West with 3:45 remaining in the first quarter. NU's Gavin Potter started the drive when he recovered a Davis fumble and NU took over at the Rhode Island 19 yard-line. NU immediately took it in for the score that made it 7-7.
With under five minutes left in the first half, Potter intercepted a Davis pass to give NU the ball at its own 32. A Kevin Lawler reception and a West rush got NU up to the URI 43. Six plays later, Quintin Mitchell caught a Brady pass at the eight yard-line, giving NU a first-and-goal. The Huskies got the ball into the end zone when Brady connected to Shane Hopkins for an five yard touchdown pass. NU set up three blockers on the far left side and Hopkins ran it in behind them. That gave NU a 14-7 lead at halftime.
