Northeastern led 17-14 at the half, but Navy scored twice in the first six minutes of the third quarter and held on for a 28-24 win over the Huskies on Saturday afternoon in front of 25,115 fans at Navy Marine-Corps Memorial Stadium.
The loss snaps NU’s modest two-game winning streak over I-A opponents. Prior to today’s game, the Huskies defeated Ohio in 2002 and Connecticut in 2000 its last two games versus I-A teams.
Navy (2-0) took a 21-17 lead on its opening drive of the second half on quarterback Aaron Polanco’s third short touchdown run of the day, a one-yard plunge, with 10:56 left in the third quarter.
On NU’s next possession, Reggie Sealey intercepted a pass by senior quarterback Shawn at the Husky 30 and returned it to the 21. The Midshipmen needed just four plays to again find the end zone as Frank Divis took it around the right side for a three-yard score, widening the margin to 28-17.
With all the momentum now on Navy’s side, the Huskies marched 83 yards in 11 plays, the final one a 19-yard touchdown toss from Brady to junior wide receiver Cory Parks with 3:12 remaining in the third. The TD pass was the 39th of Brady’s career, putting him in sole possession of second place on the school’s all-time list, as well as the 19th scoring reception of Parks’ career, moving him into a tie for second with Jeremy Gobeil ’94. It was also Parks’ 99th career grab, sixth most in school history.
Brady’s swing pass to sophomore running back Shawnn Gyles deep in NU territory with 11:19 left fell incomplete. Gyles, however, was behind Brady when he touched the ball, resulting in a fumble, which was recovered at the 16 by Jeff Vanak. Navy could only advance the ball to the nine, and Geoff Blumenfeld’s 26-yard field goal try was no good, keeping the score 28-24.
Northeastern got the ball back once more and reached its 48-yard line, but Brady’s fourth-down pass with just under three minutes left was batted away, and Navy ran out the clock.
On the game’s first play from scrimmage, senior cornerback Richard Orah picked off Polanco’s pass along the near sideline and returned it to the Navy one-yard line. Two plays later, Brady scored on a quarterback keeper to give the Huskies a quick 7-0 lead and extend Northeastern’s streak of consecutive games with a rushing touchdown to 19. It was the second interception in as many games for Orah, who’s playing in place of the injured Jeremiah Mason.
The Midshipmen answered right back as Polanco capped a four-play, 61-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run of his own, evening the score at 7-7.
Junior Miro Kesic pinned Navy at its own two with a well-placed punt early in the second quarter, and the Husky ’D’ forced the Midshipmen to go three-and-out. Senior Quintin Mitchell returned Blumenfeld’s punt to the 31, giving the Huskies their best field position of the game.
Three plays later, junior Anthony Riley went right up the gut and scored from 24 yards out, putting Northeastern ahead, 14-7.
As senior co-captains should do, Polanco put his team on his back, engineering an epic 16-play, 83-yard march which took 7:56. He took it in himself, again from two yards out, drawing the Mids even at 14-14 with 3:08 left in the half.
Northeastern got the ball back, but was stopped and had to punt. On its way down, the ball hit Keith Lisante on the helmet and was recovered by senior Gavin Potter at the Navy 44. That led to a 23-yard field goal by Kesic just before the close of the half.
