Junior wide receiver Cory Parks caught a touchdown pass and threw for another to lead No. 18 Northeastern (2-1, 1-0 A10) to a 27-3 win over Towson on Saturday night in front of 4,322 fans at Johnny Unitas Stadium.
Parks put the game out of reach when he hauled in a 19-yard touchdown pass from senior Shawn Brady with 9:12 left in the third quarter that made it 24-7.
It was the 40th scoring toss of Brady's career, putting him in a tie with Jim Murphy '98 for the school's all-time record, and the 20th TD catch of Parks' career, moving him past Jeremy Gobeil '94 and into second in the annals of Husky football. The key play in the drive was a 40-yard misdirection play by junior Anthony Riley. Riley finished with 117 yards, the sixth 100-yard game of his career.
Towson (1-2, 0-2 A10) out-played Northeastern for much of the first half, but a number of big plays gave the Huskies a 17-3 lead at intermission.
The Tigers got on the board first on a 31-yard field goal by Stephan Toth with 5:12 to go in the first quarter.
Sophomore cornerback Richard Orah left the game in the first quarter with a left ankle injury and did not return. He was taken for X-rays, the results of which are not yet known.
Towson looked to be driving for another score in the second quarter, but senior strong safety Gavin Potter stepped in front of an Andrew Goldbeck pass and returned it 75 yards to the Tiger 13. The Towson defense held, and junior kicker Miro Kesic booted a 22-yarder to tie it at 3-3 with 6:33 remaining in the half.
With three-and-a-half minutes left in the second, Brady hit senior wide receiver Quintin Mitchell over the middle, and he raced 67 yards down to the Towson six. The completion is the Huskies' longest of the season as well as the longest of Mitchell's career. Mitchell led NU with 83 receiving yards in the game.
Three plays later, Brady sneaked it in from one yard out to put NU up 10-3 with 2:25 showing on the clock. The score extended Northeastern's streak of consecutive games with at least one rushing touchdown to 20.
On the second play of Towson's ensuing drive, Potter picked off Goldbeck again and ran it 46 yards into the end zone, but the play was called back for an illegal block in the back. It marks the second straight game a Northeastern player has recorded two interceptions; Orah pulled off the feat two weeks ago against Navy. Potter was second on the team in tackles with 10. Senior linebacker Liam Ezekiel paced the Huskies with 12 stops.
On the same drive, with 15 seconds left and the ball on the Towson 34, the Huskies executed a perfect wide receiver option to go up 17-3 just before the half. Brady threw laterally to Parks on the far side. As the defense collapsed on him, Parks hit a wide-open Marc Thomas, who was streaking down the sideline, for the touchdown. It was the first TD pass of Parks' career.
The Huskies out-gained Towson, 390-141, and held the ball nearly 10 minutes longer (34:46 to 25:14) than the Tigers.
Northeastern travels to Williamsburg, Va., on Saturday, Oct. 2 for a 1 p.m. meeting with William & Mary.
