Junior Shawn Brady's three-yard touchdown pass to senior Quintin Mitchell with under a minute left sent the game into overtime, but Northeastern failed to score on the first possession of the extra period and two-time All-Atlantic 10 kicker Greg Kuehn nailed a 28-yard field goal on the ensuing possession to give William & Mary a wild 38-35 win Saturday in front of 8,267 fans at Zable Stadium.
With Northeastern (2-2, 1-1 A10) leading 28-27, Brady drove the Huskies all the way down to the William & Mary 16, but his pass attempt to junior Cory Parks was picked off in the end zone by strong safety Jonathan Shaw. Three plays later, Tribe signal-caller Lang Campbell hit a streaking Dominique Thompson over the middle for a 77-yard touchdown pass, then found Joe Nicholas in the back of the end zone for the two-point conversiobn, putting W&M (3-1, 2-0 A10) up 34-28 with 2:34 remaining.
Brady again led Northeastern down the field, gaining a first down at the Tribe 17. A dropped handoff followed by incomplete passes to redshirt freshman James West and Parks set up a fourth down. Brady threw over the middle to junior Patrick Graham, who reached behind him to make an acrobatic catch at the three-yard line. On the next play, Brady lobbed a three-yard touchdown pass to senior Quintin Mitchell to knot things at 35-35 with 42 seconds left.
That was Brady's third touchdown pass on the day. He finished 18-of-33 for a career-high 301 yards while Mitchell caught six balls for 86 yards. It is the first 300-yard passing game for a Husky quarterback since Sept. 25, 1999, when Jason Quinlan threw for 348 versus William & Mary. Brady now has 4,945 career passing yards, good for second on the NU charts.
Brady was sacked for a loss of 11 yards on the first play of Northeastern's overtime drive. He then threw two straight incomplete passes to leave junior kicker Miro Kesic with a 53-yard field goal attempt, which was short.
This was Northeastern's first overtime game since Oct. 30, 1999, when it fell to Delaware, 37-34. The Huskies are now 1-3 in overtime games. On the first drive of the second half, the Tribe marched 72 yards in eight plays, culminating in a four-yard Elijah Brooks touchdown push at the 11:05 mark to give his team a 21-14 advantage.
The ensuing kickoff, which was short, was returned 49 yards by sophomore fullback Shane Hopkins. He appeared to get stacked up in NU territory, but fought through a wall of defenders to bring it back to the W&M 27. West eventually took it in from two yards out -- his first touchdown in a Husky uniform -- to knot the score at 21-21 with 8:54 left in the third. West led all rushers with 48 yards on 12 carries.
Kuehn's 30-yard field goal with 5:24 to go in the third broke the deadlock and put the Tribe ahead 24-21.
NU then went 65 yards in seven plays, the biggest one a 38-yard pass from Brady to Parks. Freshman Maurice Murray's one-yard plunge gave NU a 28-24 lead with 2:12 left in the third. Murray rushed 13 times for 37 yards.
Kuehn brought his team within one, at 28-27, with a 23-yard field goal with 6:57 left to play.
William & Mary started the scoring with 4:27 left in the first quarter on Campbell's two-yard scramble. The key play in the drive was running back Jon Smith's conversion on fourth-and-1 down to the NU 29.
Junior Bismark Osei's first career interception gave Northeastern the ball at the W&M 44 with 9:19 remaining in the half. Three plays later, Brady connected with Parks on a historic 27-yard scoring strike to even the count at 7-7.
It was the 41st TD pass of Brady's career, moving him past Jim Murphy '98 to become Northeastern's all-time leader in that category. For Parks, it was his 21st touchdown reception, putting him in second place all alone on NU's career list. He had been tied with Jeremy Gobeil '94.
That pair hooked up again later in the half, this time on a third-and-goal play from the William & Mary 23. Brady dropped the ball perfectly over Parks' outside shoulder just before he crossed the goal line, putting NU up 14-7 with 1:53 showing on the clock. Parks finished with seven catches for 170 yards, both game and season highs. He moves into fourth on the school list in both categories.
The Tribe answered right back just before intermission on Campbell's second two-yard scoring run of the day, making it 14-14. Campbell ran the two-minute drill to perfection, leading his team on a six-play, 71-yard drive which took just 1:26. He completed 22-of-36 passes for 378 yards on the day.
Senior Liam Ezekiel led the NU defense with 13 tackles (eight solo) and a sack while junior EJ Jackson registered nine stops.
Northeastern returns home to Parsons Field next Saturday to take on Villanova in a 12:30 p.m. game.
