Shawn Brady threw four touchdown passes – a school-record-tying three to Cory Parks – and Jamil Young made a game-saving pass deflection as No. 23 Northeastern beat 14th-ranked Villanova, 34-30, Saturday afternoon in front of 4,126 fans at Parsons Field.
With just over eight minutes left and NU down 30-27, Brady completed a 41-yard bomb to Parks on the far sideline, putting the ball at the Villanova 24. Later in the drive, on a third-and-eight from the ’Nova nine, Brady passed to Shawnn Gyles in the left flat. He cut back inside, eluding a defender, and crossed the goal line for his first career receiving touchdown. Miro Kesic’s extra point made it 34-30 with 5:41 showing on the clock.
On Villanova’s ensuing drive, with the ball at the NU 40, quarterback Marvin Burroughs rolled out to his right and threw, but his pass went right into the hands of Charles Hughley at the 32, and he returned it to the NU 40. A personal foul penalty on the Huskies put the ball at the 25 with 1:53 remaining.
Northeastern (3-2, 2-1 A10) went three-and-out, giving the Wildcats one last chance. They got the ball at their own 37 with 44 seconds left. Burroughs completed passes of 20, 15 and six yards to put the ball at the NU 22. After one pass was incomplete and another batted down at the line of scrimmage, it brought up fourth down. Burroughs tried to hit Christopher Polite on the near sideline, but Young dove to break up the pass, and the Huskies escaped with the win.
The Wildcats (3-3, 0-3 A10) took the opening kickoff and marched down the field with ease. With ball at the four-yard line, Burroughs eluded the rush and found tight end Anthony Wright in the back of the end zone to put Villanova up 7-0. Burroughs was 4-for-5 for 43 yards on the drive.
Northeastern answered right back with a 10-play, 66-yard drive of its own, culminating in a 13-yard touchdown pass from Brady to Parks with 8:55 left in the first quarter. Kesic’s extra point attempt was blocked by Allyn Bacchus, keeping it 7-6 Villanova.
It stayed that way until the first play of the second quarter, when Terry Butler went right up the gut from 17 yards out to give Villanova a 14-6 advantage.
The Huskies went back to the well with 13:06 left in the half as Brady hit Parks over the middle for a 24-yard TD pass. NU went for the two-point conversion, but Brady’s pass attempt was batted down, and the score remained 14-12. The big play on the drive was a juggling, 38-yard reception by Quintin Mitchell along the near sideline.
Villanova looked like it would hit paydirt once more, gaining a first-and-goal at the Husky four midway through the second quarter. However, after the NU defense stuffed an option play, Wright dropped a potential touchdown pass in the back of the end zone, and Matt Campopiano sacked Burroughs for a loss of 15 yards, it had to settle for a 36-yard Adam James field goal to widen the margin to 17-12 .
Northeastern got the ball back with 5:19 showing on the clock and, in two plays, moved it to the Wildcat 26. From there, the Brady-to-Parks connection worked for the third time on the day as Brady lofted a pass over the middle and Parks fought off a defender to come down with the ball. The three touchdown catches for Parks tie the school for a whole game, held by himself, Dave Klemic (three times) and Bob Buonopone.
The Huskies again went for two, and again Brady’s pass was knocked down. The teams went into the locker room with Northeastern holding an 18-17 lead.
Northeastern struck first coming out of the break on Kesic’s season-long, 41-yard field goal 2:50 into the half.
With just over five minutes left in the third quarter, Brady hit Mitchell for a 34-yard gain down to the Villanova 10. Three plays later, Maurice Murray punched it in from one yard out to put NU up 27-17. It was Murray’s team-leading fifth rushing TD of the year. Amazingly, Kesic’s extra point was blocked for the second time on the day. Coming into the game, Kesic had missed just two PATs in 119 career attempts.
J.J. Outlaw’s six-yard touchdown run with 14:26 left to play cut the deficit to 27-23, but Justin Simmons blocked the extra point to keep the margin four.
After a stalled Northeastern drive, the Wildcats got the ball back. On a third-and-nine from his own 47, Burroughs hit a wide open Outlaw over the middle, and he took it to the house, giving his team a 30-27 lead with 8:22 remaining.
Brady just missed his second straight 300-yard passing game, finishing 17-for-24 for 299 yards. Parks hauled in eight passes for 164 yards while Mitchell caught four balls for 104. It is the first time two Husky receivers had 100-yard days in the same game since Oct. 16, 2000, when Andy Alsup (109) and Dave Klemic (102) pulled off the feat against Villanova. Parks now has 1,970 career receiving yards, moving him past Bill LaFreniere '82 and into third place all-time on the school charts.
James West led the Northeastern rushing attack with 76 yards on 16 carries. Liam Ezekiel registered a season-high 19 stops, his fourth straight double-digit tackle game. Gavn Potter and Mike Hall posted 11 and 10 tackles, respectively.
The Huskies play their final non-conference game of the season next Saturday when they travel to Cambridge to face Harvard at 1 p.m.
