Northeastern led 19-7 late in the first half, but Massachusetts scored 19 of the last 22 points and hung on for a 26-22 win over the Huskies on Saturday afternoon in front of 4,612 fans at Parsons Field.
It was a historic day for senior linebacker Liam Ezekiel, who broke the NCAA I-AA career tackles record. He registered seven stops on the day, giving him 481 for his career, one more than Western Illinois' Lee Russell.
Following an interception by senior Gavin Potter, junior Miro Kesic kicked a 23-yard field goal with 2:15 to play in the second quarter, giving the Huskies a 19-7 lead.
Massachusetts (5-5, 3-4 A10) struck just before the end of the half on Jason Peebler’s 23-yard touchdown catch with 34 seconds on the clock. Michael Torres’ extra point was no good, and the teams went into the locker room with the score 19-13.
UMass held NU on the first possession of the second half, then embarked on a 13-play, 53-yard drive spanning 6:26. After Tim Day’s 16-yard completion to Brandon London on a third-and-nine play gave the Minutemen a first down at the NU two, Rich Demers rumbled into the end zone, putting his team back on top, 20-19.
Northeastern (3-6, 2-4 A10) countered with a lengthy drive of its own, going 78 yards in 16 plays over 7:53. Freshman Maurice Murray carried 10 times for 39 yards in the march, which was perpetuated by a roughing the kicker penalty.
The drive stalled at the four, and from there Kesic booted a 21-yard field goal to give NU a 22-20 lead with 13:21 remaining in the game. It was Kesic’s 34th career field goal, moving him past Lance Gordon ’89 and into second on the school’s all-time list.
Murray finished with 104 yards on 23 carries, his first career 100-yard game. He is the third Husky running back this season to rush for 100 yards in a game. Redshirt freshman James West has three 100-yard efforts and junior Anthony Riley has one.
Steve Baylark’s one-yard touchdown run with 10:07 left to play made it 26-22 Minutemen. Baylark’s 49-yard run earlier in the drive is the longest rush by a Husky opponent this season. He racked up 181 rushing yards on 29 carries.
With less than three minutes left and UMass facing a third-and-seven and its 47, Day fired a pass to Jason Peebler. Junior safety EJ Jackson knocked it away, but he was flagged for pass interference and the drive continued. The Minutemen were able to run out the clock.
Day connected with London on a five-yard touchdown less than four minutes into the game, giving UMass an early 7-0 lead. The drive was highlighted by Day’s 34-yard completion to J.J. Moore.
Kesic’s 21-yard field goal with 5:28 left in the first quarter made it 7-3.
After the Minutemen went three-and-out, NU took over at its own 38. Two plays later, with the ball at the Minuteman 30, Shawn Brady lobbed a scoring pass to Cory Parks to put the Huskies up 10-7. It was the 12th TD reception of the season for Parks, putting him all alone in second place on the NU charts. The record is 15, set by Dave Klemic in 1998.
Brady was 12-of-19 for 165 yards, while Parks caught four passes for 81 yards. Parks now has 1,024 receiving yards on the year, second most in the annals of NU football behind the 1,175 Klemic amassed in 1998.
The Huskies upped the advantage to 16-7 on Murray’s four-yard touchdown run with 10:45 remaining in the half. It was his sixth rushing TD of the season, tying him with Brady for the team lead. The score extends Northeastern’s streak of consecutive games with a rushing touchdown to 26. Kesic missed the extra point, his fifth unsuccessful PAT on the year.
Northeastern has lost four in a row, its longest losing streak since 2000.
Northeastern travels to Hempstead, N.Y., next Saturday to play Hofstra at 3:30 p.m.
