Sophomore quarterback Frank Jankowski completed 16 of 25 passes for 241 yards and one touchdown and sophomore Matt Dicken rushed for two scores as Villanova defeated Northeastern 38-20 in an Atlantic 10 football game played Saturday night at Villanova Stadium.
After spotting the Huskies (0-3, 0-1 Atlantic 10) an early 3-0 advantage on a 46-yard field goal by senior Miro Kesic, the Wildcats (1-1, 1-0 Atlantic 10) strung together two touchdowns to build a 13-0 advantage at the end of the first quarter. Villanova's first touchdown came on the efforts of freshman Darrel Young who blocked a punt by junior Jared White and recovered the ball in the endzone. The block was the first for Villanova since Nov. 16, 2002 versus Rhode Island. The PAT failed, and the Wildcats built a 6-3 lead with 6:11 to play in the first quarter. Next, Jankowski, making his first start in place of the injured Marvin Burroughs, put together a nine play, 70-yard drive as he completed three of three passes for 45 yards. Senior Mo Gibson brought the Wildcats to the NU two yard line on a 17-yard rush, which was taken into the endzone by sophomore Matt Dicken.
Following the score, both teams were sent to the locker rooms and the 10,511 fans in attendance were cleared from the stadium as the game was delayed 80 minutes due to a severe lightning storm.
Coming out of the delay, Northeastern looked reenergized, as the Huskies put together a three-play, 74-yard scoring drive that took just 1:13. Redshirt freshman Anthony Orio completed a short pass to senior Cory Parks, who spun the play into a 19-yard gain. On the next play, it was Orio and Parks again, this time hooking up for a 46-yard reception. Sophomore Maurice Murray finished the job with a seven-yard scoring run, to close the Wildcat lead to 13-10.
On the next possession, the Huskies made a crucial stop, as Villanova moved the ball deep into Northeastern territory. On second down, freshman Craig Kenney deflected a Jankowski pass and the Northeastern defense forced a 35-yard field goal attempt by senior Adam James that sailed wide left. But the Huskies could not capitalize on the stop, as an Orio pass, intended for Parks, was intercepted by junior Rodney Badger at the NU 39. Badger fumbled the ball on his way to the endzone, but it was recovered by senior Brian Hulea for the score. The Huskies blocked the PAT, but the Wildcats had a 19-10 lead with 10:35 in the second.
Villanova then built a 26-10 lead to take into the half on the efforts of senior wide receiver John Dieser. Jankowski connected with Dieser for his first reception of the day and a 27-yard gain to move the ball to the NU 10. A pass interference penalty on Northeastern moved the ball to its own two, as Dicken carried the ball in for his second score of the day. The eight-play drive covered 60 yards over a span of 3:30.
Similar to the first half, the Huskies reached the scoreboard first in the second half, as Kesic converted a 37-yard field goal to close the Villanova lead to 26-13 at 11:19 in the quarter. On the first play of Northeastern's next possession, Orio's pass was intercepted by Hulea and returned to the NU 18. The drive resulted in a 19-yard field goal from James at 6:42 in the third.
The Wildcats continued to pressure the Husky offense, as freshman John Sperazza, now taking the snaps, fumbled a lateral attempt which was recovered by Hulea. Two plays later, Jankowski hooked up with sophomore Anton Ridley on a 27-yard scoring strike, for Jankowski's first career TD pass and a 35-13 lead. However, for the third time on the night, the Wildcat PAT failed as the kick sailed wide right.
Villanova would build on its lead once more, as Jankowski hit Dieser for a second time, this an elusive 46-yard gain. Villanova would convert that drive into a 34-yard James field goal and a 38-13 lead early in the fourth.
However, Northeastern would strike last, as junior Richard Orah intercepted a Jankowski pass with just over eight minutes to play in the fourth, giving the Huskies the ball at the VU 39. Sperrazza completed four straight passes and Murray rushed the ball six yards for his second score of the afternoon, accounting for the final score on the evening.
Orio completed just 10 of 24 passes for 133 yards and two interceptions, while freshman John Sperrazza took his first collegiate snaps, completing 10 of 19 passes for 81 yards. Parks led all receivers as he caught eight passes for a game-high 129 yards for Northeastern. Murray finished the day with 80 yards on 13 carries and two touchdowns. For the Wildcats, Jankowski connected on 16 of 25 passes for 241 yards, a touchdown and one interception. Gibson led the Villanova rush as he recorded 80 of the teams 101 rushing yards on 15 attempts.
Junior Jamil Young led the Husky defense with 13 total tackles, including five solo, as well as one pass breakup. Hulea led the Wildcat defense with 14 total hits, as well as one fumble recovery and one interception. The Huskies completed just five of 14 third downs attempts, as they tallied 346 total yards of offense compared to 342 from Villanova.
The Huskies return home next Saturday as they welcome Towson University in an Atlantic 10 game, beginning at 12:30 p.m. at Parsons Field, while Villanova hosts Pennsylvania in a non-conference game, beginning at 7 p.m.
