The Massachusetts defense held Northeastern to just 72 total yards, while senior R.J. Cobbs rushed for 99 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Minutemen to a 27-0 victory over the Huskies in an Atlantic 10 football contest played in a rain-soaked McGuirk Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The game marks the first time since Sept. 30, 2000 that Northeastern was held scoreless. The last shutout was a 42-0 loss to Delaware.
After taking over possession on the Northeastern 31-yard line, Cobbs rushed the distance to give the Minutemen a 6-0 advantage at 12:33 in the first quarter. He would build the advantage to 13-0 on a 13-yard run up the left side for his 19th career touchdown with 1:58 remaining in the opening period.
Northeastern opened the second quarter with possession, but redshirt freshman Anthony Orio was intercepted at the NU 35-yard line by senior Shannon James who returned the ball for the score. James, who leads all active Division I players with 19 career interceptions, scored his first touchdown of the season to put Massachusetts on top 20-0.
The Massachusetts scoring continued as redshirt freshman Liam Coen completed a six-yard pass to junior Kyle B. Harrington to increase the advantage to 27-0 heading into the half. The drive started at the UMass 21-yard line on an interception by junior James Ihedigbo.
The Minutemen gained 120 yards rushing in the first half, compared to just 11 by Northeastern. The Massachusetts defense forced three turnovers in the half, but saw their streak of nine-straight quarters without a turnover come to a close on a kick return fumble by Cobbs, which was recovered by NU sophomore Kevin Brown early in the first.
Neither team could muster much offense in the second half, as weather conditions made it difficult for each offense to operate. The two teams combined to gain just 26 total yards in the third stanza and 43 in the fourth.
For the afternoon, Orio completed just four-of-15 passes for 36 yards and threw three interceptions, while Coen was five-of-nine for 53 yards with a touchdown, but also two fumbles lost for the Minutemen.
Sophomore Maurice Murray rushed for 72 yards on 25 attempts for Northeastern, but the Huskies saw their streak of 31-straight games with a rushing touchdown came to a close.
Senior Serge Tickum was one of four Minutemen to record seven total tackles, as he also assisted on a sack. Sophomore Cesar Rosario also chipped in with an interception. For the Huskies, freshman Cornelius Bunch notched a game-high 11 total tackles and recovered a fumble, while fellow freshman Craig Kenney chipped in with nine total tackles on the day.
Northeastern returns to Parsons Field next Saturday as it welcomes William & Mary in an Atlantic 10 matchup beginning at 2 p.m., while the Minutemen also continues A-10 play, as it plays host to James Madison beginning at Noon in Amherst.
