Thanks to a new configuration of the stadium, the game becomes the largest crowd to ever attend a Hokies’ home game and is the largest crowd that the Huskies have ever played before, eclipsing the 42,302-fan mark set at Boston College in 1999.
The Huskies opened the game with possession on their own 20-yard line, but were forced to punt, after losing five yards on the initial drive. Junior Eddie Royal returned senior Jared White’s punt 20 yards to set up the Virginia Tech offense on Northeastern’s 33-yard line. On the third play of the drive, Glennon hit sophomore Branden Ore with a pass on the sideline, which he turned into a 26-yard play. On the next snap, Ore carried the ball the final six yards into the endzone for the game’s first score.
The Huskies second drive ended after Orio’s pass intended for redshirt freshman receiver Tony Lott was picked off by Brandon Flowers in front of NU’s sideline at the Hokies’ 46. Glennon and the offense returned, needing just one play, a 54-yard reception by Josh Morgan to push the lead to 14-0 with 7:14 remaining in the first. That advantage would extend to 21 points at 3:29 when sophomore George Bell ended a drive with a 1-yard scoring plunge which began after the Hokies blocked White’s punt and recovered the ball at the NU 12-yard line.
The Huskies entered VT territory for the first time on the opening play of the second quarter when Orio hit Mandeville with his third completion, a 24-yard pass to the VT 38. Northeastern failed to score, but the defense put a stop on the VT offense after sophomore Wil Colon sacked Glennon for a loss of nine yards.
The Husky defense gained some momentum in the second quarter by making its second consecutive stop. Under pressure by a pair of NU linebackers, Glennon was intercepted by senior Louvans Charlot for his first career INT.
White, who was playing just an hour from his hometown of Daleville, Va., put the Northeastern defense in fine shape again later in the quarter, as he placed a punt on the VT 3-yard line with 3:21 remaining in the half. However, a 55-yard touchdown pass from Glennon to Ore with 1:07 on the clock gave the Hokies a 28-0 advantage to take into the locker room.
After the break, the lead pushed to 35-0 when junior Carlton Weatherford caught a 4-yard pass from Glennon at 5:28 to cap off a seven play, 63-yard drive over a span of 2:35. Midway through the third quarter on a third-and-long, Orio attempted a pass to sophomore Chris Plum but was intercepted on the way out of bounds. However, after official review, the call was reversed and the Huskies were able to punt. The Hokies then were flagged for roughing the kicker and Northeastern was given its best position of the day, a 1st-and-10 at the Virginia Tech 35, but failed to capitalize. The Hokies took over and put three points on the board on a 30-yard field goal from senior Brandon Pace with 12:30 in the fourth.
With just over seven minutes remaining in the game, VT junior Jared Develli attempted a 34-yard field goal but was blocked by junior Kevin Brown. Northeastern also attempted a field goal on its final drive after pushing to the VT 25, but a 42-yard field goal by freshman Mat Johnson was blocked to end the game at 38-0.
Orio finished the day 13-of-24 and Mandeville was the top Husky-receiver, making three grabs for 51 yards in the first half. Overall, eight Huskies made receptions, including three players making their first career catches. Junior Maurice Murray took 18 handoffs and rushed for 69 net yards, while sophomore Alex Broomfield gained 31 yards on 11 attempts.
Leading the way for Virginia Tech, Ore rushed 11 times for 54 yards and a score, while Bell picked up 30 yards on eight carries with a touchdown. In the air, the Hokies had five receivers pick up at least 19 yards, led by Ore’s 81 and Morgan’s 65, each with a touchdown. Redshirt freshman quarterback Ike Whitaker entered in the third quarter and completed 6-of-9 passes for 49 yards.
Defensively for Northeastern, senior Lamar Gay and junior A.J. Lillie were the day’s top tacklers, each turning in seven total tackles, while Gay broke up a pass at the 1-yard line late in the third. Sophomore Cord Parks and senior Louvans Charlot each had six total tackles. For Virginia Tech, junior Brett Warren recorded eight total tackles, while Flowers and Parker combined for six tackles and two interceptions.
The Huskies return to Div. I-AA action next Saturday afternoon as they travel to Worcester to take on Holy Cross. The game kicks off at 1 p.m. and will be televised live on CN8.
