Sophomore quarterback John Sperrazza engineered a 65-yard yard scoring drive in the final minute of the fourth quarter and freshman Mat Johnson connected on a career-long 35-yard field goal on the final play of the game to lead Northeastern to a 27-24 victory over No. 18 Delaware on Saturday afternoon at Parsons Field.
The win gives head coach Rocky Hager 100 for his career, as his all-time record improves to an impressive 100-43-1 in 13 seasons.
The Blue Hens (2-3, 1-2 Atlantic 10) evened the score at 24 when senior tight end Ben Patrick caught a 9-yard pass and brought it in the endzone with a minute remaining on the clock. However, the Huskies (2-4, 1-2 Atlantic 10) took control of the ball at their own 35 after Delaware’s kickoff bounced out of bounds. Sperrazza completed five of his six passes in the drive, including a crucial 17-yarder to senior Bill Monan who hauled it in at the Delaware 18-yard line, moving Northeastern into field goal range with just four seconds remaining. The teams exchanged time outs, then Johnson took the field, drilling home the victory and snapping a three-game losing streak for NU.
The win is just the Huskies’ third in 12 contests between the schools, but NU has now claimed victory in three of the last four meetings.
Sperrazza, who made the start in place of an injured Anthony Orio, finished 17-of-32 for 272 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.
Northeastern pieced together its strongest offense performance, totaling 469 yards of offense and its highest scoring total of the season. Leading the way for the Huskies was junior tailback Maurice Murray, who rushed 24 times for 130 yards and a touchdown. Murray also helped the Huskies jump out to a quick lead, rushing for 50 yards on the very fist play of the game to set up Johnson’s 20-yard field goal. On the first play of Northeastern’s second drive, Sperrazza connected with Murray on a short pass, which he ran into 69-yard play to the Delaware 2-yard line. Sophomore Alex Broomfield took the ball the rest of the way, ending with a 1-yard score to take a 10-0 advantage at 8:28 in the first quarter. Broomfield finished the day with 65 yards rushing on 13 carries.
The Blue Hens responded, however, with three consecutive scores; a pair of 1-yard runs by freshman tailback Jared Bradley and a 34-yard field goal from sophomore Zach Hobby. Delaware entered halftime with a 17-10 advantage.
Bradley finished with 14 yards rushing on eight carries in the game, while sophomore Kervin Michaud was the Blue Hens’ leading rusher, picking up 48 yards on seven carries. Junior quarterback Joe Flacco was strong for UD, completing 24-of-41 passes for 242 yards. His top receiver was redshirt freshman Mark Duncan, who made seven catches for 78 yards. Patrick finished the day with 66 yards on five receptions.
The Huskies rallied in the second half when Sperrazza hit a slicing Kendrick Ballantyne with an 11-yard endzone grab, which he hauled in with one hand to even the ballgame at 17 with 4:51 in the third. The senior tight end finished with four catches for 53 yards. The Huskies spread their passing game around, as seniors Shane Hopkins and Monan, and sophomore Brian Mandeville and Chris Plum all finished with at least 30 yards receiving.
On the defense, it was another consistent effort from the Huskies, as they were led by senior Richard Orah, who totaled six tackles (five solo). Northeastern notched four tackles for loss and sacked Sacco two times on the day. The Blue Hens amassed just 58 total rushing yards and an even 300 yards of total offense. Delaware’s ground attack was limited as junior All-America Omar Cuff was sidelined with an ankle injury. Five different Huskies recorded pass break ups as well, while sophomore Jason Vega and senior Louvans Charlot each recovered fumbles for NU.
Leading the Blue Hens’ defense, senior KeiAndre Hepburn notched 10 total tackles (eight solo) and recovered a fumble. Senior Rashaad Woodard and sophomore Fred Andrew each made six stops for Delaware, who drops its second straight A-10 contest.
The Huskies will ride their momentum into a bye week, as they return to action on Oct. 21 when they host top-ranked New Hampshire on Homecoming in an Atlantic 10 match up beginning at 2 p.m.
