Richmond senior running back Tim Hightower rushed for a career-high 246 yards and scored a career-high four touchdowns to lead the Spiders to a 49-14 victory over the Northeastern football team Saturday at Parsons Field.
The Spiders (1-1, 1-0 CAA Football), who rushed for a school-record 443 yards on the day, scored on four of their first six possessions, taking control of the game from the start.
The Huskies (0-2, 0-1 CAA Football), down 21-0 in the second quarter, responded when senior Maurice Murray ran in for a two-yard score, capping a 57-yard drive.
In the second half, the Spiders took a 42-14 lead on rushing touchdowns by Hightower and Justin Vaughan. After taking possession again, the Spiders were driving for another score when backup quarterback Will Healy tried to throw a shovel pass that instead found Huskies defensive lineman Mike Lukenda, who ran it back for a 59-yard interception return to the Richmond 16. The return was the longest by a Husky since Gavin Potter had a 75-yard return at Towson on Sept. 25, 2004.
With momentum on Northeastern's side, Murray ran in for a one-yard touchdown to cut the Spiders lead to 42-14, but that was as close as they came.
The Huskies were led by Murray, who rushed for 83 yards on 22 carries. Murray moved into third place all-time in Husky rushing history, passing Brian Vaughan (1993-96). Murray currently stands at 2,516 yards, 344 yards away from second place and 1,176 yards away from first place all-time. Murray also moved closer to the rushing and total touchdown records. He is five shy away from Tim Gale's (1999-03) rushing record of 36 and 11 shy of Dave Klemic's (1997-00) overall record of 42.
Defensively, junior Craig Kenney led with seven tackles and a fumble recovery. Redshirt freshman David Akinniyi had five tackles, including a sack.
In addition to Hightower's 246 yards, Justin Vaughan rushed for 110 yards and Justin Forte chipped in 78, each scoring touchdowns in the second half.
The Huskies will look to rebound next week when they host Northwestern State, Saturday, Sept. 15 at Parsons Field at 12:30 p.m.
