The Northeastern University football team hung in with No. 15 Delaware all day, but the Blue Hens controlled the ball for 11 minutes of the fourth quarter and held on for a 30-20 victory in front of 21,570 fans at Delaware Stadium.
The Huskies and Blue Hens began the fourth quarter tied at 20-20, but Delaware took the lead once again as Joe Flacco hit Omar Cuff with a screen pass and he went downfield for a 25-yard touchdown. Delaware led 27-20 at 13:53.
On the following possession, Northeastern ran eight plays and reached the Delaware 38, but was forced to punt the ball. Delaware took over at its own 8-yard line and controlled the ball for the next 8:37. The drive ended when Jon Striefsky kicked a 19-yard field goal for a 30-20 lead with only 1:35 left in the game.
The Huskies (1-5, 0-3 CAA Football) failed to score on their final possession.
The Blue Hens (6-1, 4-1 CAA Football) got on the board first after taking the opening kick 44 yards in nine plays to the 30-yard line, where Striefsky kicked a 37-yard field goal for a 3-0 Delaware lead.
Northeastern was unable to score on its first possession, but the Husky defense recorded a takeaway when junior Cornelius Bunch hit Flacco as he was throwing and the ball landed in the arms of senior Kevin Brown for an interception.
Capitalizing on the turnover, the Huskies scored on their first play as junior Anthony Orio hit Brian Mandeville in the middle of the field with a pass and Mandeville took it 76 yards for a touchdown and a 7-3 lead.
Delaware immediately responded as Cuff ran in for a two-yard touchdown that capped a seven-play, 61-yard drive. The TD gave Delaware a 10-7 lead.
In the second quarter, the Huskies scored once again as senior Maurice Murray rambled into the end zone for a two-yard touchdown and a 14-10 advantage. A key play that produced the touchdown came on a third down as the Husky line shifted three lineman to the outside and Orio hit redshirt freshman Conor Gilmartin-Donohue with a six-yard pass to produce a first down.
On the scoring drive, Murray became the second Northeastern rusher to reach 3,000 career yards. For the game, Murray rushed for 95 yards on 26 carries with two touchdowns. Murray is now one rushing touchdown away from tying Tim Gale (1999-03) for most in school history.
Late in the second quarter, Delaware added a 31-yard Striefsky field goal to cut the deficit to 14-13.
On their first possession of the second half, the Blue Hens reclaimed the lead as they marched down the field 89 yards in 12 plays, the final one a Cuff 11-yard touchdown run, making it 20-13, Delaware.
The Huskies came back with another score as Murray went in for his second touchdown of the day, a one-yard run. The Huskies would have taken the lead, but Mat Johnson’s extra point attempt was blocked keeping it tied, 20-20.
For the Huskies, Orio was 18-for-23 for 198 yards and one touchdown pass. Mandeville led the receivers with 99 yards. Defensively, junior Cord Parks led NU with nine tackles. Senior Jason Anzalone and junior Wil Colon each recorded sacks on the day.
For Delaware, Cuff rushed for 200 yards on 39 carries with two touchdowns. Flacco passed for 222 yards and a touchdown, completing 17 of 26 attempts. Anthony Bratton made 10 tackles for the Blue Hens.
The Huskies will try for a win next Saturday, Oct. 20 when they travel to McGuirk Stadium in Amherst, Mass. to take on Massachusetts at 12 p.m. The game will be televised live on CN8.
