The Massachusetts Minutemen racked up 24 first half points and caused five turnovers in a 24-7 victory over the Northeastern University football team Saturday at McGuirk Stadium in Amherst, Mass.
The win was the Minutemen’s fifth in a row over the Huskies and 21st of the last 23 meetings.
UMass got two passing touchdowns in the first quarter from Liam Coen, who hit Rasheed Rancher with a 15-yard pass and J.J. Moore with a 25-yard pass. The Minutemen led 14-0 after one quarter.
After Matt Lawrence ran in for a one-yard touchdown to make it 21-0 UMass, the Huskies answered back when junior Anthony Orio ran a bootleg into the end zone for a one-yard run, cutting the deficit to 21-7. One of the key plays of the drive was a 29-yard catch by junior Chris Plum that brought the Huskies to the UMass 2.
That was as close as Northeastern (1-6, 0-4 CAA Football) could get though as the Minutemen (6-1, 4-0 CAA Football) forced five turnovers. The Huskies fumbled the ball away twice in the first quarter, Orio threw an interception in the second quarter and junior John Sperrazza threw an interception and fumbled the ball in the fourth quarter.
Senior Maurice Murray led the Huskies on the ground with 89 yards. He has closed within 548 yards of the NU rushing record. Orio was 12-of-24 in passing for 162 yards. Sperrazza was 6-of-13 for 50 yards. Defensively, junior Craig Kenney led with 12 tackles. Sophomore Chris Byrne and senior Joe Mele each recorded sacks for NU.
Coen was 13-of-17 for 191 yards and two touchdowns in the first half. He left the game at the end of the second quarter with an injury. His replacement, Scott Woodward was 7-of-11 for 57 yards. Matt Lawrence led the Minutemen ground game with 110 yards on 25 carries.
The Huskies return home next Saturday, Oct. 27, to take on the Maine Black Bears on Homecoming Day at Parsons Field at 2 p.m.
