The Rhode Island Rams took advantage of some Northeastern University miscues to score 28 of the game's final 41 points, leading to a 35-30 victory over the Huskies Saturday afternoon at Meade Stadium in Kingston, R.I.
Despite the loss, senior captain Maurice Murray became Northeastern's all-time rushing king in the first quarter when he had a 28-yard rush on NU's first play of its third drive. Murray would go on to become the new Northeastern touchdown king when he scored on an 14-yard rush just a few plays later.
With 182 rushing yards on the day, Murray finishes his Northeastern career with 3,806 yards, 114 more than L.J. McKanas (1998-01), who previously held the record with 3,692 yards. Murray's 43 total touchdowns also sets the career mark, which was previously held by Dave Klemic (1997-00). In addition, Murray's 819 rushing attempts is a Northeastern career record.
Murray's 2007 season also ranks high in the Northeastern archives. His 1,421 rushing yards and 302 rushing attempts this season are both second-most in NU history and his 14 rushing touchdowns ties him with Tim Gale (2002) and L.J. McKanas (2001) for most in a season by a Husky tailback.
The Huskies, who got rushing touchdowns from Murray and junior Alex Broomfield in the first quarter, took a 17-7 lead with 3:24 remaining in the first half when sophomore Mat Johnson knocked in a season-long 38-yard field goal. Rhode Island turned the tide afterwards. On the fourth play of the ensuing drive, NU's junior Wil Colon was flagged for a personal foul on second and 20 on the URI 40, giving the Rams new life. Two plays later, Derek Cassidy hit Jimmy Hughes with a 32-yard touchdown catch to cut Northeastern's lead to 17-14 with 1:57 remaining.
The Rams then surprised everyone with an onside kick, which they recovered at their own 41-yard line. The Rhody offense came back on the field and marched down to the end zone where Cassidy connected with Shawn Leonard on a four-yard touchdown catch, sending Rhody to a 21-17 halftime lead.
The Huskies bounced back in the third quarter with an eight-play drive as Orio ran in for an eight-yard touchdown. The key play of the drive was an Orio 36-yard pass to redshirt freshman Conor Gilmartin-Donohue that placed Northeastern on the 10-yard line. The Huskies regained the advantage, 24-21.
After forcing URI to punt, the Huskies came back out on offense, but on the third play, Orio threw a pass right into the hands of URI linebacker Adrian Owen for an interception at the NU 20. The Rams capitalized as Cassidy ran in on a keeper for a two-yard TD, giving URI a 28-24 lead with 42 seconds left in the third quarter.
On the following drive, the Huskies were forced to punt, but NU had another mistake as the snap was well over the head of sophomore punter Ron Conway, who recovered the ball, but it gave Rhody excellent field position at the NU 29. The Rams took the ball and scored again, a five-yard touchdown run by Anthony Ferrer, putting them up by 11, 35-24, 12:09 left in the game.
The Huskies breathed new life late when redshirt freshman Lloyd Clarke blocked his second punt of the game and freshman Darryl Jones ran it into the end zone 26 yards for a touchdown. NU failed on the two-point conversion, leaving it at 35-30. The Rams took the kickoff and ran off 12 plays to end the game.
Ferrer led the Rams with 109 rushing yards on the day. URI had 249 rushing yards as a team. Cassidy was 8-for-17 for 123 yards and two touchdowns.
Defensively for Northeastern, senior Joe Mele recorded a career-high 17 tackles and chipped in half a sack, which he shared with Colon. Redshirt freshman Nate Thellen had an interception before leaving the game with an injury.
The Huskies finish the season 3-8, 2-6 in CAA Football. Rhode Island finishes the season with an identical record.
