Ball State downs Huskies 48-14 in opener

The Northeastern University football team opened the 2008 season with a 48-10 loss to the Ball State Cardinals Thursday night at Schuemann Stadium in Muncie, Ind.
Ball State quarterback Nate Davis was 21-for-24 with 290 yards and three touchdown passes to lead the Cardinals (1-0) while senior quarterback Anthony Orio was 14-for-30 with 149 yards to lead the Huskies (0-1).
The Huskies took the opening kickoff and managed a strong drive into Ball State territory. Senior quarterback Anthony Orio guided the Huskies to the Cardinals 31-yard line, but they were unable to get closer. Orio’s pass to senior tight end Brian Mandeville on third down was broken up, forcing the Huskies to punt.
Ball State took over at its own 20 and marched down the field for a touchdown in just four plays. The highlight was MiQuale Lewis’ 48-yard run across the field to the NU 22. Lewis then scored from two yards out on a rush just two plays later, making it 7-0. Lewis had 95 yards on 11 carries in the game.
The Huskies got the ball back and again were able to drive down the field. Orio hit sophomore Greg Abelli with a seven-yard first-down catch. Senior tailback Alex Broomfield followed it up with a 12-yard first down. On third and long, Orio tried a floating pass to Broomfield, but he was tripped up a BSU defender. Pass interference was called and the Huskies’ drive continued.
That gave Orio a chance to bring NU closer to the end zone. On consecutive third down situations, he ran option plays to the left for first downs, gaining 12 yards on the two plays. He got the Huskies to the BSU 21. However, the drive stalled out there as the Huskies picked up an illegal motion penalty for too many receivers moving before the snap. On third and long, Orio scrambled out of the pocket, but he took too long with the ball and was sacked by Robert Eddins for a 14-yard loss. That put the Huskies out of field goal range.
After junior Ron Conway pinned Ball State on its own four with an excellent punt, the Cardinals put together a nine-play, 96-yard drive that included a mix of runs and passes. It was capped by an eight-yard TD catch by tight end Darius Hill from quarterback Nate Davis. Ball State led 14-0.
The Huskies’ next drive failed and Conway punted again. On Ball State’s first play, Davis connected with Dante Love for a 49-yard touchdown pass with just 10 seconds elapsed on the drive. Ball State went up 21-0 with 10:33 to play in the second quarter.
On Northeastern’s next possession, Broomfield had some big runs for the Huskies, picking up three first downs, including a 16-yard dash into Ball State territory. However, NU failed to convert on a third down, leading to another Conway punt. Returner B.J. Hill took the punt and ran it back 72 yards to the NU 18, setting up another touchdown. This time it Love took the pitch from Davis for a two-yard sprint to the end zone, giving BSU a 28-0 advantage with 5:52 left in the first half. Love had nine catches for 171 yards and a touchdown both in the air and on the ground.
The Huskies got another chance to put points on the board before the end of the first half and finally converted. To start the drive, Broomfield rushed nine yards before fumbling, but Orio was there with the recovery and first down. On third and long, Orio then hit Mandeville with a 16-yard first down pass to midfield. With 1:11 remaining and facing a third and 11, Orio completed a pass to senior Chris Plum, who then handed off to a waiting Lott, who ran it 18 yards to the BSU 27 for a hook-and-ladder play.
Orio then hit Abelli with a seven-yard pass to the Cardinals’ 20-yard line. After an NU timeout, Orio looked to pitch to a tailback, but Abelli, lined up in the slot, intercepted it and followed his blockers to the goal for a 20-yard TD run. Junior Mat Johnson hit the extra point, cutting the deficit to 28-7 with 50 seconds left.
However, Ball State immediately answered with a five-play, 64-yard drive to get to the NU 18, where Ian McGarvey kicked a 25-yard field goal as time expired, sending Ball State to a 31-7 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Ball State controlled the tempo, holding the ball for over 16 minutes, including over 10 minutes of the third quarter. Davis threw his third TD pass of the day, hitting Daniel Ifft with a 27-yard strike with 6:46 to play in the third.
The Cardinals scored twice more in the fourth quarter as Cory Sykes ran in for a six-yard TD at 14:38 and McGarvey kicked a 46-yard field goal at 4:10. That made the score 48-7 in favor of Ball State.
However, the Huskies did not quit. Getting the ball back with 4:05 to play, they drove down the field 81 yards, led by backup senior quarterback John Sperrazza. On the first play of the drive, Sperrazza lofted a pass to Plum, who went 40 yards downfield to the BSU 41. On a third and five at the BSU 36, he connected with junior Adhir Ravipati for a 13-yard catch. Two complete passes later, Sperrazza had the ball at the 10 and he found sophomore Conor Gilmartin-Donohue in the end zone for a touchdown. Sperrazza was 6-for-7 with 82 yards in his only series of the night.
Despite the lack of points, the Huskies did move the ball well throughout the game, racking up 324 total yards and 21 first downs. Plum led the NU receivers with 89 yards. Broomfield led the rushers with 62 on the ground. Conway had a big night punting, averaging 41.1 yards, including a 52-yarder.in the fourth quarter.
Defensively for Northeastern, junior Phil Higgins and senior Cornelius Bunch each had nine tackles.
The Huskies will have an early bye week and will be back on the field on Saturday, Sept. 13 when they take on Georgia Southern in Statesboro, Ga. at 6 p.m.
