Huskies lose at William & Mary, 38-17

William & Mary had 415 yards of total offense and Derek Cox had a punt return and an interception return for touchdowns as the Tribe handed Northeastern a 38-17 loss Saturday night at Cary Field at Walter J. Zable Stadium in Williamsburg, Va.
The loss leaves Northeastern at 2-8, 1-5 in CAA Football while the Tribe improve to 7-2, 5-1 in CAA Football.
After Northeastern took the opening kickoff, the offense went three-and-out, setting up a Ron Conway punt. Conway kicked the ball to returner Derek Cox, who took the ball back 89 yards for a touchdown. It was the first time an NU opponent returned a punt for a touchdown since the 1999 season when Maine had one. Just 1:34 into the game, William & Mary had a 7-0 lead.
The Huskies answered back with a 12-yard touchdown run by senior Alex Broomfield at 10:03. The touchdown was set up by an excellent 24-yard wide receiver run by senior Rob Theoudele. The rush came at the Tribe 36 and got NU to the 12, setting up the Broomfield run.
At the end of the first quarter, William & Mary tacked on a touchdown when Jake Phillips hit Jimmy Hobson with a three-yard touchdown pass. That touchdown was set up by a 61-yard reception by D.J. McAulay from the Tribe 33 to the NU 6. The Tribe had a 14-7 lead after one quarter.
The Huskies got into position to score again with a long drive into the red zone. However, they were unable to convert on 3rd-and-2 at the Tribe 5. They settled for a 22-yard Mat Johnson field goal to cut the deficit to four, 14-10.
After each team punted, the Tribe took over at their own 15, and on the first play from scrimmage, Jonathan Grimes found a hole and ran 67 yards to the NU 18. Three plays later, Phillips found Chase Hill in the end zone for a three-yard touchdown and a 21-10 advantage.
Near the end of the first half, the Huskies found themselves in W&M territory again with a chance to score. The Huskies had the ball at the 23 on 4th-and-8. The team lined up for a field goal try, but holder Chris Plum pulled back and ran for the first down. He fell short by a yard, ending the possession. The Tribe went into halftime with a 21-10 lead.
The Tribe opened the second half with a five-yard TD run by Phillips to make it 28-10. After NU punted, the Tribe went back out on offense and drove to the red zone where Brian Pate hit a 35-yard field goal for a 31-10 lead.
The Huskies scored again when Anthony Orio found Broomfield in the end zone for a three-yard touchdown pass. At the end of the third quarter, William & Mary led 31-17.
Northeastern appeared to gain momentum early in the fourth quarter when Wil Colon forced Phillips to fumble in the red zone. The ball was recovered by Jocquez Fears and gave NU possession on its own 5. Three plays into the NU drive, however, Orio threw a pass that was intercepted by Cox, who ran 12 yards in for a touchdown.
Phillips was 15-for-22 for 217 yards and two touchdowns for the Tribe. Cox racked up 110 return yards to go with his two touchdowns. Grimes had 16 carries for 130 yards.
For Northeastern, Orio was 25-for-43 for 247 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Broomfield carried the ball 23 times for 51 yards. He also caught seven passes for 56 yards. It was the third time this season that Broomfield scored multiple TDs in a game.
The Huskies got strong special teams performances from T.J. Jackson and Ron Conway. Jackson had 147 kick return yards on the night, averaging 24.5 yards a return. Conway punted for an average of 44.5 yards, including a 51-yard punt. He placed two inside the opponent 20.
The Huskies complete the road portion of their schedule next Saturday when they play Hofstra at Shuart Stadium in Hempstead, N.Y. at 1 p.m.
