Hofstra totaled 523 yards of offense, including 342 rushing yards, as the Pride beat the Northeastern football team 42-14 Saturday at a rainy and windy Shuart Stadium in Hempstead, N.Y.
The loss was NU's sixth in a row and left the Huskies at 2-9, 1-6 in CAA Football. The Pride improved to 4-7, 2-5 in CAA Football.
Everette Benjamin led the Hofstra ground attack with 122 yards and a touchdown. Freshman Brock Jackolski rushed for 91 yards and two touchdowns. Aaron Weaver was the top receiver for HU with 46 yards and two touchdowns.
Senior Alex Broomfield led the Huskies with 80 all-purpose yards. At quarterback, Anthony Orio was 11-for-22 for 66 yards. He became just the fifth NU quarterback to throw for 2,000 yards in a season. He stands at 2,011 yards with one game remaining.
Defensively, Phil Higgins made 16 tackles for Northeastern, surpassing the 100-tackles mark for the season. With 107 tackles this season, he is ninth all-time in NU history in single-season tackles.
In the first half, both teams struggled with turnovers, but it was Hofstra that was able to capitalize. On the Pride's first possession, Steve Probst fumbled the ball away to Darryl Jones at the NU 24. However, two plays into the NU drive, Orio tried to connect with Tony Lott, but the ball went off Lott's hands and into the hands of Hofstra's Ray McDonough.
On the ensuing Hofstra drive, Probst threw a two-yard touchdown pass to Weaver for a 7-0 lead with 7:54 left in the first quarter.
Hofstra added three points late in the first quarter when Roger Williams tied a school record with a 54-yard field goal, aided by a gust of wind at his back Hofstra led 10-0 after one quarter.
Hofstra got the ball back after an NU punt, but Probst fumbled again. This time, David Akinniyi sacked him, jarring the ball loose. It was picked up by Mike Laperriere and gave the Huskies the ball at the Hofstra 20. The Huskies capitalized four plays later when Broomfield ran into the end zone on a three-yard touchdown. NU was down just 10-7 with 10:57 to play in the first half.
The Pride added six more points when Benjamin scored on a 25-yard touchdown run at 2:11 of the second quarter. The PAT failed, leaving Hofstra with a 16-7 lead.
The Huskies went for a score before halftime, but Orio's pass in the flat was intercepted by Deron Mayo at the NU 43. Hofstra took advantage, putting up six more points when Probst found Weaver in the end zone for a four-yard touchdown pass. Hofstra had a 22-7 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Jackolski scored touchdowns of 19 and 21 rushing yards, adding to the Hofstra lead. Ray Bennett capped Hofstra's scoring with a two-yard touchdown run.
In relief of Orio, John Sperrazza came in in the fourth quarter and scored a touchdown on a two-yard run. It was his first career touchdown rush.
Northeastern will cap the 2008 season with a game against Rhode Island on Senior Day at Parsons Field at 1 p.m. The Huskies will honor their 14 seniors in a pregame ceremony.
