NU ends season with loss to URI

Rhode Island rushed for 211 yards and received three field goals from Louis Feinstein to defeat the Northeastern University football team 29-14 Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at a cold and windy Parsons Field.
In a pregame ceremony, the Huskies honored their 14 departed seniors. Playing their final games as Huskies were Cornelius Bunch, Wil Colon, Art Dias, Brian Mandeville, Anthony Orio, Cord Parks, Tyler Perkins, Chris Plum, John Sperrazza, Rob Theoudele, Corey Thomas and Mark Washington. Alex Broomfield was also honored, but he missed the game due to an injury. Also honored was former offensive lineman Josh Belko, who was unable to play this season due to injury.
In the loss, sophomore tailback John Griffin was a highlight as he scored two touchdowns, one rushing and one receiving, and rushed for a career-high 110 yards.
The Huskies opened the scoring late in the first quarter as Griffin brought the Huskies downfield with his speedy legs. He carried the ball on seven of eight plays on the drive, including the eight-yard dash into the end zone at 1:28. NU led 7-0.
After Feinstein missed his first field goal attempt of the day, the Huskies got the ball back and looked to drive. When the offense stalled out, the Huskies tried to punt, but Ron Conway's kick was blocked by Rodney Mitchell. The ball was recovered by Brandon Johnson-Farrell, who took it back 32 yards for a touchdown. It was the first punt block for a TD allowed by Northeastern since Villanova had one in 2005.
On the next drive, three plays in, Orio tried a pass up the middle to Conor Gilmartin-Donohue, but the sophomore tight end bobbled it as he was hit, and it was intercepted by Matt Hansen. The turnover led to a Feinstein 40-yard field goal and a 10-7 lead.
The Huskies answered with Griffin leading the way. After Parks had a 52-yard kickoff return, Griffin had 14 and 16 yards, respectively, on back-to-back rushes. He finished the drive with a spectacular 11-yard touchdown catch from Orio in the back corner of the end zone. The Huskies regained the lead 14-10 with 33 seconds to go before halftime.
In three plays, Rhode Island managed to get itself into field goal range. With five seconds on the clock, Feinstein booted a 42-yard field goal, cutting the deficit to one, 14-13, at the half.
In the second half, the Rams scored on their first possession as Jimmy Hughes picked up an 11-yard rushing touchdown. Feinstein's PAT attempt failed, so the Rams led 19-14.
Feinstein made it 22-14 Rhode Island with a 29-yard field goal at the 4:57 mark of the third quarter. Meanwhile, Northeastern could not get the offense going. In the red zone, the Huskies took four shots from the Rhode Island 20, but couldn't get a first down.
Northeastern had another chance to tie the game after Colon blocked URI punter Tim Edger's punt attempt. The Huskies got the ball on the Rhode Island 13, but after an incomplete pass, Kevin Newhall was whistled for a personal foul. Two plays later, Mat Johnson's 46-yard field goal try was blocked by Kirk Blackmon.
Rhode Island finished off the Huskies with a 12-play, 71-yard drive that ended with a three-yard touchdown run by Anthony Ferrer.
For the Rams, Hughes finished with 93 yards on the ground and 49 yards in the air. Quarterback Derek Cassidy was 13-for-22 for 157 yards.
For the Huskies, Orio was 5-for-17 for 47 yards and a touchdown. He finishes his Northeastern career first in completion percentage, third in passing yards, second in passing attempts and completions and tied for fifth in passing touchdowns.
Phil Higgins finished with 15 tackles to lead the NU defense. With 122 tackles on the year, he finishes the season with the most tackles in CAA Football. His number also ranks tied for fifth all-time in single-season tackles at Northeastern.
The Huskies finish the 2008 season with a 2-10 record, 1-7 in CAA Football. Rhode Island is 3-9, 1-7 in CAA Football.
