Syracuse edges Huskies, 30-21

Senior quarterback Anthony Orio threw for a career-high 293 yards and tossed two touchdowns, but the Northeastern University football team took a 30-21 loss at Syracuse Saturday at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y.
Orio was 23-for-37 on the day, completing many long passes to his receivers. However, the Huskies were outdone by the Syracuse rushing attack, which had two 100-yard rushers. Curtis Brinkley had 145 yards on 24 attempts with a touchdown. Doug Hogue had 100 yards on 16 tries with a score. In total, Syracuse outgained Northeastern on the ground 271-90.
Northeastern opened the game with a strong drive that reached Syracuse territory. On back-to-back plays, Orio rushed for 12 yards and then threw a 13-yard pass to Tony Lott. On the Orange 36, the Husky drive stalled out, forcing NU to punt.
On its first drive, Syracuse went 80 yards downfield for a touchdown. Brinkley rushed the first three plays before Cam Dantley connected with Mike Owen on a 16-yard pass to push into NU territory. Brinkley then had a 20-yard rush. Inside the red zone, the ball belonged to Doug Hogue, who took the ball three times, including a nine-yard rush into the end zone. Of the nine plays run on the drive, the Orange rushed the ball eight times.
The Huskies’ second drive ended after just four plays. Following a first-down pass from Orio to Chris Plum, Alex Broomfield took the ball on first down and was hit by Derrell Smith, forcing a fumble that was recovered by the Orange’s Anthony Perkins.
The Orange converted the turnover into three points after Patrick Shadle’s 46-yard field goal, giving Syracuse a 10-0 advantage.
In the middle of the second quarter, Syracuse had a drive start on its own 2-yard line after Ron Conway, who averaged 47 yards a punt on the day, hit a spiraling kick that was downed. The Orange easily got the ball out of the danger area and moved into Northeastern territory after four rushes by Brinkley. On first down at the NU 23, Dantley hit a crossing pass to Mike Owen, who fumbled the ball after a hit by Cornelius Bunch. Chris Byrne fell on it, creating the turnover for the Huskies.
Northeastern capitalized to jump-start its offense. Orio had a 10-yard rush on 1st and 20 after a holding penalty. Orio then passed to Abelli for a 10-yard completion. Orio then appeared to have hit Lott with a first-down pass, but it was ruled incomplete. Head coach Rocky Hager challenged the play, but the ruling stood as the referee decided that Lott did not have possession. The Huskies did not let that stop them as Orio hit Mandeville with a 16-yard pass up the middle on third down to get the team to the Syracuse 49.
Following two incomplete passes, the Huskies, on 3rd-and-10 went to the hook-and-lateral play as Orio passed to Lott, who then handed off to Broomfield, who rushed for the first down. That gave Northeastern momentum as Orio then hit Lott for a 12-yard gain to move to the Orange 27. That’s where Orio threw a deep pass to Greg Abelli, who made an acrobatic catch in the end zone for a touchdown with 25 seconds left. The Huskies cut the Syracuse lead down to three, 10-7, to go into halftime.
On their first drive of the second half, the Huskies were motoring towards another scoring opportunity. Orio connected with Lott on passes of 10 and seven yards. On 3rd and 1, Broomfield ran up the middle 13 yards for the first down. Orio then nailed Mandeville up the middle with a 12-yard pass into Syracuse territory. On 3rd and 4 at the Orange 40, Orio was looking to pass, but his throw was deflected high in the air by Derrell Smith, and the ball was caught by Randy McKinnon for an interception.
The Orange immediately marched down the field and tacked on another touchdown, this time on a seven-yard run by Brinkley, completing a nine-play, 61-yard drive. Syracuse had a 24-7 lead with 2:36 left in the third quarter.
The Huskies answered back with a quick strike from their own 46 as Orio threw a deep pass to Plum who caught it and ran into the end zone untouched for a 54-yard TD. The Huskies were within 10, 24-14. For Plum, it was a career-long reception.
After a Syracuse drive that resulted in a 32-yard field goal by Shadle, the Huskies went down the field and scored again. The drive began with two incomplete passes, but on 3rd and 10, Orio connected with Mandeville for a 22-yard completion to move from the NU 38 to the Syracuse 40. The Huskies picked up a pass interference penalty to move to the Orange 25. Four plays later, NU was on the one-yard line when Broomfield took it in for a touchdown. The Huskies trailed 27-21 with 6:41 to play in the game.
Syracuse made another drive count as the Orange moved the ball into the red zone again and scored on a 21-yard field goal from Shadle, upping the lead to 30-21.
The Huskies got the ball back with 1:52 to play and looked to stay in the game, but Orio had another pass tipped and intercepted by Bruce Williams, ending the Huskies’ chances.
Mandeville led the Huskies with 83 receiving yards while Orio led the rushing attack with 49 yards. Defensively, the Huskies got 10 tackles from Phil Higgins.
For the Orange, Dantley was 14-for-17 for 167 yards and a score. Defensively, Vincenzo Giruzzi had nine tackles.
Northeastern will open its 2008 home schedule next Saturday when the Huskies take on UC Davis at Parsons Field at 12 p.m. The game will be televised along the east coast on Comcast SportsNet.
