NU cruises past UC Davis in home opener

Sophomore Nate Thellen made three interceptions and returned one for a 92-yard touchdown to lead a Northeastern defense that forced six turnovers in a 27-10 win over UC Davis Saturday at a rainy Parsons Field.
Thellen's three interceptions is second-most by a Husky player in a single game. It has been done seven times previously in Northeastern history. His interception return for a TD is the first for an NU player since Neil Anderson had a 90-yard return for a score against Villanova on Nov. 9, 2002.
In addition to Thellen's three picks, junior Jason Vega had an interception to go with two sacks. Sophomore David Akinniyi recovered two fumbles by UC Davis quarterback Greg Denham, one of which was forced by senior Wil Colon, who also had two sacks.
The Aggies (1-4) had a great start to the game, scoring on their first drive, which started on their 40 after the opening kick went out of bounds. On 3rd and 6 from the Husky 46, Denham completed a pass to Bakari Grant for 22 yards to move to the NU 24. Two plats later Brandon Tucker, starting for injured tailback Joe Trombetta, scored from 15 yards out to give UC Davis 7-0.
Neither team scored again until UC Davis had the ball at the NU 47 to start a drive late in the first quarter. On the first play, Denham with Grant with a 27-yard pass to move into the red zone. However, Northeastern's defense held the Aggies on 3rd and 2, forcing a 27-yard field goal from Sean Kelley. Davis led 10-0 at the beginning of the second quarter.
The Huskies responded immediately on their next drive. Starting on the NU 33, senior Alex Broomfield took a direct snap and ran past defenders for 48 yards down to the Aggies 19. Senior Anthony Orio then completed a 16-yard pass to sophomore Lloyd Clarke to get to the three-yard line.
The Huskies then ran a play with offensive linemen lined up as split ends. Orio threw a wide receiver screen to sopohmore Conor Gilmartin-Donohue who walked into the end zone untouched for a three-yard TD. For Gilmartin-Donohue, it is now three catches for three TDs on the season. That made the score 10-7, UC Davis.
UC Davis got the ball back and three plays into the drive, Colon sacked Denham at the Davis 24, and the ball went flying backwards. Akinniyi picked it up and brought it the Aggies' four-yard line for NU possession.
Broomfield then rushed three times to get into the end zone for a touchdown, his fourth of the season, giving NU a 14-10 advantage. Broomfield had 152 rushing yards on the day for the Huskies.
The next Aggies possession ended with Vega intercepting Denham, however, NU could not capitalize. The Huskies punted, and each team had another drive end in punts. UC Davis had the ball with 3:28 to play in the first half to start another drive. On 3rd and 10 on the Davis 17, Denham threw a pass that was picked off by Thellen. NU took over at the 21.
On the first play, Broomfield took a direct snap and floated the ball to a wide open Brian Mandeville for a 21-yard touchdown score. It was Broomfield's fourth career TD pass, and it gave the Huskies a 21-10 lead.
UC Davis took one more crack at scoring before halftime and engineered an 11-play drive. However, at the NU 22, Denham went for the end zone and the ball ended up in Thellen's hands for his second interception of the day. The Huskies went into the locker room with the 21-10 lead intact.
The third quarter ended with no scoring after Kelley's 31-yard field goal attempt was wide right. That miss ended a 17-play drive that took up 7:09 of the period. In the fourth quarter, Denham lost the ball trying for a pass and it was recovered by Akinniyi again.
Following three drives that ended with punts, the Aggies were on the move again and again got into the red zone. Denham went for the end zone on a pass, but Thellen was there again for the interception. This time he had a clear path to the goal line as he ran 92 yards down the sideline for the score. Junior Mat Johnson's extra point was blocked, so the Northeastern lead was at 27-10, which was the final score.
The Huskies ended with just 264 yards of total offense, but the defense did the damage, racking up five sacks, two fumble recoveries, four interceptions and three pass breakups. Senior Cord Parks had 10 tackles.
Denham was 30-for-51 for 288 yards passing for UC Davis. Tucker had 118 rushing yards. Orio was only 5-for-16 for 65 yards for Northeastern as the team spend most of the day on the ground.
Northeastern will next play on Saturday, Oct. 4 when the Huskies take on Towson at Johnny Unitas Stadium at 12 p.m. The game will be televised on Comcast SportsNet.
