NU makes it two straight with win at Towson

The Northeastern football team scored 28 unanswered points after trailing in the first half 17-7 to defeat Towson, 35-17, Saturday afternoon at Johnny Unitas Stadium in Towson, Md.
The win is Northeastern’s second in a row and its first CAA Football victory in its conference opener.
The Huskies received great offensive performances from some of their starters. Anthony Orio was 17-for-20 for 238 yards and two touchdowns. Chris Plum caught five passes for a career-high 109 yards and caught both of Orio’s TD passes. Alex Broomfield rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown.
The Huskies got off to a quick 7-0 lead just 3:22 into the game. After Mark Bencivengo’s opening kick went out-of-bounds, NU had the ball at its own 40. On the first play from scrimmage, Orio completed a 22-yard pass to Conor Gilmartin-Donohue up the middle to move into Towson territory. After a John Griffin rush, Orio then hit Ty Sibert with a pass across the middle for 11 yards. Five plays later, Broomfield took a direct snap and handed off to Griffin, who scampered into the end zone for a nine-yard touchdown, his first career score. The Huskies led 7-0.
Towson quickly answered by putting together a 12-play drive as Sean Schaefer methodically moved the ball across the field. He was 5-for-5 for 40 yards and got the Tigers to the NU 12. On the next play, Schaefer dropped back to pass and then kept it, running 12 yards for the touchdown. Towson tied the game at 7-7.
After an NU punt, the Tigers went on the offensive again as Schaefer again found his receivers wide open. His big pass came on a sideline pattern to David Newsom for 20 yards to get to the NU 18. The Huskies though were able to contain Schaefer after Corey Thomas sacked him on third down. That forced a 41-yard field goal attempt by Bencivengo, who nailed it for his career long and he gave the Tigers a 10-7 lead.
After another NU punt, Towson again moved the ball downfield as Schaefer a few big passes, including a 32-yard strike to Newsom down the sideline to move the Tigers from the 50 to the NU 18. Four plays later, Matt Castor took the ball in from two yards out for a touchdown and a 17-7 Tigers lead at the 6:39 mark of the second quarter.
The Husky offense woke up after that as Orio completed seven passes on the next drive. He hit Plum for a big 18-yard gain. He also connected with Tony Lott for six yards on a critical 3rd-and-2. On the next play, Orio found Plum open up the middle, and after the catch, he dragged a few defenders across the goal line for a 24-yard TD. The Huskies were within three, 17-14, with 1:55 to play in the first half.
Towson attempted to score again before the halftime whistle, as Schaefer led them with a trio of 20-yard passes to move into the red zone. However, Bencivengo’s 38-yard field goal try was wide right. The Tigers went into the locker room with a 17-14 lead.
The Tigers opened the second half with possession and again moved the ball well into Northeastern territory. Schaefer got Towson to the NU 25, but the defense held up and forced a fourth down. Rather than kick a field goal, head coach Gordy Combs elected to go for it, but Schaefer’s pass to Newsom fell incomplete, turning the ball over to the Huskies. Northeastern struck again as Orio found Plum wide open twice. The first came as Orio threaded a pass to him down the left side on 2nd-and-17 for 29 yards and a first down. A few plays later, at the Towson 30, Orio faked a screen pass and found Plum wide open in the end zone for a touchdown and a 21-17 lead. For Plum, it was a career high in TD catches in a single game.
Towson got the ball back, but the Huskies quickly ended the drive when on third down Schaefer’s attempted deep pass died in the wind and was intercepted by Nate Thellen, his fourth in two games. The Huskies took over at the Towson 43.
The Huskies immediately made the Tigers pay for the turnover and used some trickery to do it. On the Towson 37, Orio snapped the ball and threw a lateral pass to the sideline where backup quarterback John Sperrazza stood. Sperrazza took the ball and flung it across the middle to a streaking Rob Theoudele, who made a spectacular grab in the end zone for a 37-yard TD. It was Theoudele’s first catch as a Husky as the senior transfer from Connecticut made was playing in just his third game for Northeastern. The Huskies led 28-17 with 5:47 left in the third.
On their next possession, the Tigers were able to once again move into NU territory as Schaefer kept the offense going. After a 21-yard pass to Hakeem Moore, the Tigers were at the NU 32 and threatening. However, the Husky defense was able to force a couple of incomplete passes. Again, Combs elected to go for it on fourth down, but Schaefer’s pass was tipped incomplete and nearly intercepted by Darryl Jones.
The Huskies took over and used some more trickery to put points on the board. On second down at the Towson 38, Broomfield took a direct snap and pitched it to Orio, who had started the play split wide. Orio then launched the ball down field to an open Greg Abelli 30 yards to the Towson 5. On the next play, Broomfield rushed up the middle for the touchdown, giving the Huskies a commanding 35-17 lead.
After the last NU TD, Towson had three more possessions, but could not muster a score, giving the Huskies the victory.
Schaefer finished the game 31-of-46 for 358 yards while Moore caught eight passes for 112 yards.
For Northeastern, Cornelius Bunch led the team with 10 tackles while Thomas and David Akininiyi each had two sacks. Drew Mack led Towson with 14 tackles.
Northeastern moves to 2-3 on the season and returns home next Saturday to play Massachusetts at Parsons Field at 12 p.m. The game will be televised on Comcast SportsNet.
