Huskies come up short vs. UMass, 28-24

Liam Coen's three-yard touchdown run with 6:42 in the game coupled with two Northeastern fumbles on its final two drives gave the Massachusetts Minutemen a 28-24 victory over the Huskies Saturday in front of 4,155 fans at Parsons Field.
The loss puts Northeastern at 2-4 on the season, 1-1 in CAA Football. UMass improves to 4-2, 2-1 in CAA Football.
The Huskies held a 24-21 lead in the fourth quarter when the Minutemen put together a quick 48-yard drive that ended when Coen got into the end zone. The Minutemen benefitted from a 30-yard Tony Nelson run down the sideline. Nelson had a game-high 175 yards.
Northeastern got the ball back with plenty of time to score, but on the first play, Anthony Orio connected with Rob Theoudele in the flat, and he bobbled the ball, gained control, but then was hit hard by Corey Davis, forcing a fumble. UMass gained possession.
UMass tried to score again, driving down to the NU 1, but Nelson was stripped on a rush by Phil Higgins and Cord Parks recovered the fumble in the end zone.
With 3:39 to play, down by four, the Huskies made another try at taking the lead. On the first play at the NU 20, Alex Broomfield, who had a career-high 169 rushing yards on the day, ran down the sideline with blocking from Art Dias to the UMass 49 for a 31-yard gain.
Four plays later, on fourth down with the game on the line, Orio took a shotgun snap and mishandled the ball, allowing the Minutemen's Jeromy Miles to recover the fumble and end the Northeastern threat.
UMass ran out the clock to end the game.
The game began with the Huskies getting off to a quick 7-0 lead after Broomfield rushed 22 yards in the end zone. His run was set up by a Greg Abelli 41-yard reverse that got the Huskies from the NU 37 to the UMass 22.
The Minutemen answered at 6:41 of the first quarter when Nelson got into the end zone after a 12-play, 64-yard drive. The key play came on third-and-seven and Coen connected with Julian Talley on a 23-yard pass to extend the drive.
The Huskies drove down and had another scoring opportunity, but Mat Johnson's 37-yard field goal attempt hit the crossbar.
After a UMass punt, the Huskies took the lead when Orio threw the ball down the sideline and found Theoudele, who outsprinted everyone for an 80-yard touchdown. It was Orio's longest completed pass and longest completed touchdown pass of his career. The Huskies had a 14-7 lead with 12:25 to play in the first half.
Three drives later, UMass tied the game after a 10-play drive that spanned 65 yards. The Minutemen took advantage of two pass interferences penalties against Northeastern to score on a one-yard rush by Chris Zardas with 18 seconds before half time.
Northeastern got the ball back at its own 49 after Rashad Jordan had a 27-yard kickoff return. Orio immediately threw to Conor Gilmartin-Donohue, who one-handed the catch for 26 yards. The Huskies were now at the UMass 25. After a UMass sideline interference penalty, the Huskies moved to the 20, where Johnson hit a 37-yard field goal, giving the Huskies a 17-14 lead at the half.
In the second half, the Minutemen took a 21-17 lead after Zardas scored again, this time from two yards out. On the ensuing kickoff, UMass' Armando Cuko shorted the ball, but no Husky went after it, allowing the Minutemen to recover.
UMass could not take advantage though as Coen tried to hit the end zone, but Nate Thellen was there to make his fifth interception in the last three games.
The Huskies took over and briskly moved down the field. In the red zone, Orio had back-to-back rushes, one for a first down and the second in the end zone for a touchdown. NU was back on top, 24-21, with 2:47 left in the third.
Neither team scored again until Coen put UMass up for good.
It was a day of offense and penalties for both teams. The two combined for 898 total yards (UMass - 475, NU - 423) and 18 penalties for 162 yards (UMass - 11-112, NU - 7-50).
Orio finished the day 10-of-19 for 179 yards a TD. His counterpart Coen was 20-for-30 with 265 yards.
Defensively, Higgins led the Huskies with 10 tackles while Chris Byrne had the lone sack of the day. Brian Ellis had eight tackles for UMass.
The Huskies look to bounce back next Saturday when they host New Hampshire on Homecoming Day at Parsons Field at 12 p.m. The game will be televised on Comcast SportsNet.
