UNH roars back to down Huskies on Homecoming

R.J. Toman passed for 277 yards and three touchdowns as No. 11 New Hampshire scored 30 unanswered points to defeat the Northeastern football team 33-21 Saturday afternoon on Homecoming Day in front of 6,109 fans at Parsons Field.
The Huskies fall to 2-5, 1-2 in CAA Football. New Hampshire improves to 5-1, 2-1 in CAA Football.
Northeastern took a 21-3 with just 28 seconds left before halftime after Alex Broomfield caught a wide-open pass from Anthony Orio for a 17-yard touchdown.
However, the Wildcats got back into the game when they marched down the field in just 26 seconds to get into field goal range. Tom Bishop hit a 37-yard field goal at the halftime marker to make it 21-6, NU.
The last-second score gave the Wildcats momentum. They took the second-half kickoff and moved it to the Northeastern 39 on a 49-yard return by Terrance Fox. After an eight-yard rush by Toman, the sophomore quarterback tossed a 31-yard TD pass to Fox, cutting the gap to eight points, 21-13. Fox had eight catches for 103 yards on the day.
After punts by both teams, UNH went back on the offensive and scored at 5:36 of the third quarter when Toman connected with Mike Boyle on a 14-yard score. UNH's two-point conversion try was no good, leaving the Huskies with a 21-19 lead.
Northeastern got the ball and moved into the New Hampshire territory, but the Wildcats picked up momentum when Orio was stopped on a 4th-and-1 rush. UNH took back possession and scored nine plays later on a 16-yard pass from Toman to Scott Sicko. With 13:47 to play in the fourth quarter, the Wildcats had a 26-21 lead.
While Northeastern's offense could not move the ball, New Hampshire added a late touchdown on a two-yard run by Robert Simpson.
New Hampshire totaled 390 yards on the day while the Huskies had 310.
To start the game, Broomfield scored rushing touchdowns at 12:10 of the first quarter and 8:36 of the second. His three total touchdowns on the day are a career high. He finished with 155 all-purpose yards (72 rushing, 67 receiving, 16 return) on the day.
Orio was 28-for-41 for 236 yards. The Huskies had four players with at least five catches, led by Broomfield's seven for 67 yards. Conor Gilmartin-Donohue had six catches for 50 yards, Greg Abelli had six catches for 42 yards and Chris Plum had five receptions for 36 yards.
On defense, Phil Higgins led NU with seven tackles while Wil Colon had two sacks.
Northeastern hits the road next Saturday for a CAA Football contest with Maine at 12 p.m. The game will broadcast live on WABI-TV in Bangor, Maine.
