NU rally falls short in 20-14 loss to Villanova

No. 7/10 Villanova totaled 426 yards of offense and held off a late Northeastern rally to top the Huskies 20-14 Saturday afternoon at Parsons Field.
The loss drops the Huskies to 2-7, 1-4 in CAA Football while the Wildcats improve to 6-2 overall, 4-1 in CAA Football.
Trailing 20-14 in the fourth quarter, the Huskies ran an 11-play drive into Villanova territory and were poised to tie the game. However, on a first down at the Villanova 13, senior quarterback Anthony Orio's pass up the middle was tipped and intercepted by Marquis Kirkland at the two-yard line with 5:39 to play.
From there, the Wildcats ran the clock out with a 12-play drive that ended inside the NU 5.
Northeastern had opened the game with a 7-0 lead thanks in part to some trickery. On the first series, the Huskies were faced with 4th-and-8 and lined up to punt. However, junior punter Ron Conway took the snap and then passed to a wide open Tony Torres for a 14-yard completion and a first down. That energized the Husky offense as the team marched down the field to the Nova 12 where senior tailback Alex Broomfield threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to senior tight end Brian Mandeville. It was Broomfield's fifth career TD pass and third to Mandeville, giving the Huskies the lead with 8:31 remaining in the first quarter.
Villanova wasted no time answering back. Six plays in to the drive, quarterback Chris Whitney threw a 20-yard TD pass to Matthew Szczur, helping VU tie the score at 7-7.
After NU's next possession ended with Orio throwing an interception to Osayi Osunde, the Wildcats got a long, 54-yard catch from Brandyn Harvey to the NU 15. Two plays later, Aaron Ball found the end zone on a six-yard carry, giving Villanova the 14-7 advantage just four seconds into the second quarter.
After a Northeastern punt, the Wildcats went back on the offensive and again found themselves in the red zone. Helped out by a 38-yard pass from Antwon Young to Szczur, the Wildcats got to the NU 11 before Joe Marcoux kicked a 28-yard field goal, extending the lead to 10, 17-7.
Before the half ended, Marcoux added a 42-yard field goal to give VU a 20-7 lead.
Villanova got the ball to start the third quarter and again moved the ball well into NU territory. This time though, the defense stepped up when senior Cornelius Bunch intercepted Whitney's pass at the 21 and returned it 43 yards to the Nova 36.
The takeaway lifted NU to a touchdown as Orio found junior wideout Tony Lott in the corner, and Lott fought his way to the goal line for a 20-yard touchdown reception. That cut the deficit to six, 20-14.
In the fourth quarter, the Huskies stopped another potential Villanova score when true freshman Jocquez Fears picked off a Whitney pass at 10:17 to give NU a chance to tie or take the lead. That's when the Huskies moved the ball to the Nova 13 before Kirkland got the interception to end NU's chances.
Villanova finished with 216 yards rushing and 210 yards passing while the Huskies had just 65 yards on the ground, 210 in the air. Whitney was 11-for-16 for 161 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions for Villanova. Orio was 16-for-25 for 158 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. Three other players had pass attempts for Northeastern. Broomfield was 2-for-3 for 29 yards and a score. Conway had his 14-yard pass while Chris Plum had a nine-yard pass complete to Broomfield.
Ball gained 91 yards on the ground while Whitney had 51. Broomfield led the Huskies with 48 yards rushing.
Defensively, junior Kerry Pollard led NU with eight tackles and a forced fumble. Villanova as a group had six tackles for a loss.
Northeastern will play at William & Mary next Saturday in Williamsburg, Va., at 7 p.m. The game will broadcast live on 890 ESPN Boston.
