Huskies hang tough, but No. 20 Maine prevails, 17-7

Northeastern (0-2, 0-1 CAA Football) put up a valiant effort
in the Huskies' opener at Parsons Field on Saturday afternoon, but No. 20 Maine
(2-0, 1-0 CAA Football) triumphed in a 17-7 affair. The Huskies forced four turnovers, including three fumble
recoveries, in the first conference game of the season, but Maine's 330 yards
trumped NU's 278 yards.
Senior linebacker Jason Vega blocked one field goal and
recovered a fumble along with three total tackles. Junior free safety Darryl Jones scooped up NU's other two
fumbles and registered five tackles, including three solo, in the Huskies'
second loss of the season. Senior Craig Kenney posted one sack for three yards
while senior Mike Lukenda led NU with two forced fumbles along with two tackles
for a loss of five yards. Redshirt freshman quarterback Matt Carroll logged 112 yards
on 15-for-24 with two interceptions. Junior tailback John Griffin led the
ground attack with 92 yards on 18 carries while junior wideout Greg Abelli
crossed the goal line for NU's first touchdown of the season. Maine's Warren Smith engineered the Black Bears, going
10-for-13 with 145 yards and a touchdown while Derek Session rolled up 114
yards on 20 touches and a score. Session busted through the left side of the line for a
39-yard rush to open the contest.
The Black Bears ran a few more plays in Northeastern's territory and on
3rd and 4, junior safety Nate Thellen averted Maine's defensive line
for a big stop. The Black Bears were forced to attempt a field goal and sophomore
Jordan Waxman connected on a 37-yard field goal to cap the five-play, 45-yard
scoring drive in 2:37 for the early 3-0 advantage at 12:18 of the first
quarter. As Maine faced a 3rd-and-2 situation on its next
possession, Session was stood up by Lukenda and coughed up the ball on Maine's
40-yard line. Jones scooped up the loose ball and brought it down to the
33-yard line. On the ensuing play, Abelli took the fake handoff on the end
around and dashed 33 yards to paydirt for NU's first touchdown of the season. The
Huskies snatched the lead, 7-3, after a successful PAT by senior Mat Johnson at
8:02 of the first quarter. On NU's first attempt of the second quarter, Carroll was
picked off by Trevor Coston at the Huskies' 46-yard line. Maine was able to
move the chains on 4th-and-9, giving way to the Black Bears' first
touchdown five plays later to regain the lead, 10-7,
at 8:13 of the second quarter. Maine's scoring drive lasted 4:04, covering 42
yards on nine plays. With 00:06 in the second quarter,
Vega permeated the line for the block and the ball was recovered by sophomore
Steven Murray Sesay at the 41-yard line to close out the half with the Black
Bears ahead, 10-7. Three punts were exchanged to
initiate the second half. The Black Bears started up its second drive of the
third quarter on NU's 47-yard line. On the first play of the drive, Smith
connected with Landis Williams for a 47-yard touchdown strike at 5:34 of the
third quarter to stretch the lead out, 17-7, following a Waxman extra try. After both squads swapped punts,
Northeastern took over on its own 42-yard line with 13:50 in the fourth
quarter. Three successful plays were negated by three successive holding
penalties, spoiling any momentum the Huskies' offense had going. NU had to punt,
but on Maine's next drive, sophomore Emmanuel Matthews picked off Smith to
thwart Maine's progression at 10:18 of the fourth. Northeastern's defense gave the
team one last chance for victory as Kenney forced a fumble on 3rd-and-8.
Jones gathered his second fumble recovery of the game and returned it to
Maine's 19-yard line with 1:16 remaining. A pass interference call set up a 1st-and-5
for Northeastern with about 30 seconds remaining, but NU could not convert on
the final drive of the game as Maine prevailed, 17-7. The Huskies resume action when they return to Parsons Field
on Saturday, Sept. 19, for a 1 p.m. contest against Youngstown State.
