Huskies fall to Tribe 34-14

The Northeastern University football team dropped a 34-14 decision to No. 8 William & Mary Saturday afternoon at Parsons Field. Redshirt freshman Matt Carroll led the Huskies with 238 passing yards, and true freshman Jordan Batts scored another touchdown.
The Tribe (5-1, 2-1 CAA Football) gained 396 total yards as their offense awoke from a first-half slumber to score four touchdowns in the second half.
Trailing 3-0 after a Brian Pate field goal, Northeastern (0-6, 0-3 CAA Football) took a 7-3 lead on its biggest play of the season. Carroll tossed a pass to an open streaking Tony Lott, who broke a tackle and ran down the sideline 76 yards for a touchdown at 6:38 of the first quarter. It was the longest gain of the season for the Huskies and the longest pass of Carroll's young career.
Pate connected on another field goal late in the first quarter to make it 7-6 in favor of the Huskies. Neither team scored in the second quarter. The Tribe threatened late, but after Marshall Dill caught a pass from R.J. Archer, NU's Mike Lukenda stripped him of the ball, and David Akinniyi recovered the loose ball for possession. The teams went into halftime with NU leading 7-6.
The second half got off to an exciting start. The Tribe took the kickoff, but went three-and-out. David Miller's punt boomed 67 yards and was downed at the NU one-yard line. The Huskies fought off the Tribe defense to get out of danger, but on an attempted pitch, Carroll fumbled the ball and William & Mary's Wes Steinman recovered the ball.
Despite starting at NU's 19-yard line, the Tribe couldn't get a first down, and Pate's 27-yard field goal attempt went wide left as the wind carried it too far.
The Huskies failed to capitalize and had to punt. After regaining possession at their own 45, the Tribe's Jonathan Grimes found an open hole and rushed 55 yards for a touchdown. The Tribe went up 13-7.
On its next possession, NU committed another turnover as Carroll fought off defenders, but threw a pass right to William & Mary's B.W. Webb, who took it back 16 yards into Huskies territory. Six plays later, Grimes rushed four yards for his second score in as many possessions. William & Mary led 20-7 mid third quarter.
The Huskies got into Tribe territory on their next possession, but on 4th-and-12, they decided to fake a punt. Craig Kenney took the ball and only had one man to beat to the first-down marker, but David Caldwell chased him down three-yards short.
The Huskies defense stepped up and held the Tribe to a punt. However, three plays into the subsequent drive, Carroll tried to dump a pass off in the backfield, but was intercepted by Sean Lissemore at the NU eight-yard line. Two plays later, Courtland Marriner carried the ball into the end zone for a four-yard touchdown and a 27-7 advantage with 10:29 to play.
William & Mary scored once more at 5:31 of the fourth quarter on an Archer eight-yard scramble.
The Huskies quickly responded with a three-play drive for a score. After John Griffin was stopped in the backfield for a six-yard loss, he took a screen pass from Carroll 43 yards to the W&M 25. Carroll then floated a pass to Batts in the end zone for a touchdown, making it 34-14.
For Batts, it was his fourth touchdown in his last three games. He finished with six catches for 57 yards and now has 32 catches for 304 yards over his last four contests.
Carroll was 16-for-28 passing. Griffin had 41 yards rushing and 75 yards receiving for a team-high 116 all-purpose yards. On defense, Phil Higgins made a season-high 15 tackles. Jason Vega chipped in eight tackles and a sack. True freshman Kyle Hunte had six tackles and forced a fumble.
The Huskies struggled with the William & Mary defense, which came into the game ranked first in CAA Football in rushing defense. NU had just 39 yards on the ground, although the team had 36 yards taken away due to sacks.
For William & Mary, Archer was 22-for-31 passing for 188 yards. His main target was D.J. McAulay, who had seven catches for 86 yards. Grimes finished with 91 yards on the ground.
The Tribe defense had four sacks, eight tackles for losses and picked up three takeaways. They were led by Evan Francks, who had 11 tackles, and Adrian Tracy, who had 2.5 sacks.
Northeastern will have a bye next week and then host Towson on Saturday, Oct. 24 at Parsons Field at 1 p.m.
