Huskies invited to Diamond Head Classic

The Northeastern University men’s basketball team will be participating in the inaugural Diamond Head Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu, Hawai’i from Dec. 22-25.

Joining the Huskies in the field are College of Charleston, Saint Mary’s, SMU, UNLV, USC, Western Michigan and Hawai’i, which will serve as tournament host. The tournament will feature 12 games through three days – Dec. 22, 23 and 25. Each team will compete in one game per day, advancing through a bracket-tournament format. The two teams that remain undefeated throughout will face off in a championship match on Christmas day, Dec. 25.

The tournament will be a part of a five-game swing on the west coast for Northeastern, which will also take part in the Cable Car Classic, hosted by Santa Clara, Dec. 29-30. Under fourth-year head coach Bill Coen, the Huskies continually have had one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the country. Over the last three seasons, the Huskies have played 15 games against teams from “BCS” conferences.

The Huskies are no strangers to long travel. Last season, during their 19-13 campaign, they racked up approximately 31,634 miles in round trip travel. NU traveled 4,224 miles alone on its trip to Wyoming, where the Huskies won their first postseason game in 25 years.

Northeastern also has history in Hawai’i, playing in the Maui Invitational in 1990. That season, the Huskies lost to Indiana, defeated Loyola Marymount and then lost to Toledo.

The rest of Northeastern’s 2009-10 non-conference and conference schedule will be announced at a later date. The Huskies will return seven lettermen from last season’s team that finished tied for third in the Colonial Athletic Association, including four of five starters.
