Former Northeastern University men’s basketball standout Jose Juan Barea was named to the Colonial Athletic Association Silver Anniversary team, the conference office announced Tuesday.
As part of its 25th Anniversary celebration in 2009-10, the CAA is recognizing Silver Anniversary teams in 21 championship sports. The teams are selected by a panel of current and former head coaches in the conference.
Barea, who lettered at Northeastern from 2002-06, is one of the Huskies’ all-time greats. He finished his career as the school’s No. 2 all-time scorer with 2,290 points. He also is No. 1 at Northeastern in three-point field goals (255) and No. 2 in assists (721).
Barea was a four-time All-Conference selection, including a three-time first-team pick. In 2006, he was named AP All-America honorable mention, CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Player of the Year and CAA Player of the Year, after leading the conference in scoring (21.0 ppg) and assists (8.4 apg). He was the first player in conference history to lead in both categories. In both his junior and senior seasons, Barea was in the top 20 in the nation in scoring and assists.
After his Northeastern career, Barea was signed by the Dallas Mavericks and thus far has enjoyed a three-year career. In 2008-09, he played in 79 games for the Mavericks, making 15 starts. He averaged 7.8 points and 3.4 assists.
