| 2002-03 Schedule/Results Northeastern 89, Albany 80 (OT)
Javorie Wilson matched a career high with 25 points and Cornellius Wright had a career-high 24 points to lead Northeastern to an 89-80 overtime win over Albany in an America East game at the Recreation and Convocation Center in Albany, N.Y. on Sunday afternoon. NU has now won four in a row and five of its last six, improving to 5-4 in America East and 12-10 overall. Albany dropped to 5-14 and 1-6 in conference play. The Huskies also got 14 points off the bench by Aaron Davis and a career-high 10 from Derrell Keys, who made his first career start. NU was playing without leading rebounder Sylbrin Robinson for the first time this season after he suffered an elbow injury on Friday against Hartford. Antione Johnson, who led Albany with 23 points, had a chance to give the Great Danes a two-possession lead with his team ahead 74-71 and 26 seconds left in regulation. But Johnson missed the front end of a one-and-one. Wilson grabbed one of his 10 rebounds for the Huskies and got the ball to Keys. In transition, Keys found freshman guard Jose Juan Barea, who sank a three-pointer from the left wing to tie the game at 74 with 20 seconds showing. After a timeout, Johnson tried to beat Davis off the dribble and missed a 12-foot fadeaway jumper as time expired, forcing OT. NU dominated the extra session, scoring six unanswered points in the first minute. After NU won the tip, Davis scored on a quick layup. Wright then stole a pass and Keys converted at the other end. Albany’s Earv Opong was whistled for a five-second violation and NU capitalized as Wright rebounded a Keys miss and scored inside for an 80-74 edge with 4:00 on the clock. The Danes managed to get within three twice, the last time at 83-80 with 1:37 to go, but Wilson was fouled on a drive to the basket and converted a pair of free throws for an 85-80 advantage with only 51 seconds left. Albany missed its last six shots of OT and NU was 8-10 from the foul line in the final two minutes to secure the win. It was a close game throughout the second half with neither team holding more than a four-point lead. Johnson had 15 second-half points and gave Albany a 64-60 cushion with 8:47 left. Davis made a three-pointer to trim the deficit to one and after an Opong turnover, Wright rebounded a Davis miss and scored to give the Huskies a 65-64 lead with 6:33 to go. The teams then traded the lead five times in the next four minutes. Wright, who had 16 of his 24 after the half, put NU up 71-70 with a jumper at the 2:53 mark. The Huskies then had a turnover and missed three straight shots as Albany took control. Opong, whose layup with four seconds left gave Albany a 51-50 win in NU's last visit to Albany, looked to be the hero again as he made shot just inside the three-point arc with 58 seconds left to give the Danes a 74-71 lead. When Wilson missed a three at the other end and Johnson was fouled with 26 seconds left, it appeared Albany would pull it out. But Johnson's free throw miss led to Barea's dramatic shot. Barea had made just two of 12 field goal tries before his big trey, including all six of his attempts from beyond the three-point arc. NU took an early 26-19 lead, but the Great Danes used a 10-3 run to tie the game at 29 with 6:54 left in the first half. Jamar Wilson (20 points) started the surge with a pair of baskets. The game was tight the rest of the half with three more ties and a pair of lead changes. The Huskies took a 42-41 edge into intermission. VISITORS: Northeastern 12-10, AE 5-4
