Senior Jesse Pellot-Rosa scored a game-high 13 points with six rebounds to help lift Virginia Commonwealth to a 64-44 victory over Northeastern in CAA men's basketball action on Monday night at Alltel Pavillion.
Pellot-Rosa and the Rams (12-3, 4-0 CAA) used a stifling full court press and controlled the glass, securing 19 offensive rebounds to break open a 31-29 advantage at the half.
Virginia Commonwealth shot 41.2 percent for the game and limited the Huskies (3-12, 1-3 CAA) to a 4-of-18 effort (22.2 percent) in the second after an 11-of-22 first half performance. VCU held a lead as large as seven points in the opening 20 minutes of play, but the Huskies played tough to climb within two at the break.
The Rams opened up the second half by applying a tough full court press, causing NU problems, as the Huskies turned the ball over 18 times in the game. The Rams outscored the Huskies in the paint, 40-16, and held a 43-26 advantage on the boards.
Joining Pellot-Rosa in double figures for VCU, sophomore Eric Maynor scored 10 points with five assists and senior B.A. Walker chipped in 10 points and four rebounds. Junior Wil Fameni just missed a double-double with 10 rebounds and nine points.
Leading the way for Northeastern was senior Bennet Davis who scored 12 points with seven rebounds and five assists. Freshman Matt Janning added nine points while senior Bobby Kelly and sophomore Eugene Spates each scored seven.
Northeastern returns home to host Georgia State on Wednesday night beginning at 7 p.m. at Matthews Arena.
