The Northeastern University men's basketball team defeated James Madison, 67-51, at Matthews Arena on Wednesday night. Matt Janning led all scorers with a career-high 23 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the field and 3-of-7 from behind the arc. Janning contributed on the defensive end as well with career-highs of two blocks and five steals.
Bennet Davis played limited minutes in the first after picking up two fouls but freshman Manny Adako stepped up inside with a career-high 13 points and five rebounds. Davis still had a nice night with 13 points, five rebounds and four assists. The pair, along with Eugene Spates and Mark Washington, helped the Huskies outscore JMU, 30-20, in the paint. Davis finished the night four points shy of 1,000 in his career. NU point guard Adrian Martinez did a good job navigating JMU's zone defense as he matched his career-high, handing out a game-high eight assists. Bobby Kelly was the fourth Husky in double figures with 10 points.
The Huskies outrebounded the Dukes, 27-21, limiting JMU to only five second-chance points on seven offensive rebounds. In one of the Huskies best defensive outings of the year, NU held its opponent to 51 points on 45.2 percent shooting. The Huskies shot 53.2 percent from the field and 47.1 percent from 3-point range.
The score was 23-22 in the Huskies favor to start the second half and remained close until NU mounted a 23-11 run that began at the 16:42 mark in the second period. The Huskies exploded for 23 points in 10 minutes to put the game out of reach. The run was highlighted by three Janning three-pointers as NU forced JMU into seven turnovers during that stretch. The Huskies took their largest lead of the game at 21 points on a fast break alley oop from Martinez to Kelly with 1:23 remaining. NU put up 44 points and shot 68.2 percent in the second half.
The Huskies play next against Delaware at Matthews Arena on Saturday at 1 p.m.
