The Northeastern University men's basketball team beat Maine (11-16, 6-8 America East) on Saturday at Matthews Arena, 71-61. The matchup was part of the 2007 ESPNU Bracket Busters.
Bennet Davis led all scorers with 19 points, five boards and four blocks. Manny Adako got two more blocks and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds, hustling for five of those boards on the offensive end. The Huskies blocked eight shots in the game with Mark Washington adding two rejections. Bobby Kelly added 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting with five rebounds. Adrian Martinez was the third Husky in double figures with 11 points on 3-of-5 shooting from 3-point range.
NU posted 21 assists with only 12 turnovers while forcing Maine into 10 miscues, as the Black Bears had only 10 assists in the game. Matt Janning led the Huskies in the passing department with five assists to go with eight boards and nine points. Six Huskies had at least two assists and five had at least three.
The Huskies had a good day shooting the ball from 3-point range against Maine's zone defense, as NU was 7-of-18 from long range compared to the Black Bears who were 6-of-21 (28.6 percent) from behind the arc.
The Huskies outplayed Maine in the first half as NU limited the Black Bears to nine first-half field goals on 28.1 percent shooting. The Huskies were 14-for-27 (51.9 percent) in the period and outscored Maine, 35-19, to open up a 16-point halftime lead.
NU continued to dominate play early in the second half and extended its lead to 20 points with 14:38 left in the game. Maine battled back though and outscored the Huskies, 25-12, over the next 12 minutes to trail by only seven with the score 60-53 and 2:45 on the clock. The Black Bears were unable to get any closer, as NU was 10-of-13 at the foul line in the second half to hold off the Maine comeback.
