Northeastern to play in 2kSports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer

The Northeastern men’s basketball team will open up the 2008-09 season with a trip to Ann Arbor, Mich., to play in the 2kSports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer.

The 16-team tournament is broken up into four regionals with the winners of each regional advancing to the semifinals and championship/consolation rounds at Madison Square Garden in New York, N.Y.

Northeastern has been placed in the Michigan Regional and will play IUPUI in the first round on Tue., Nov. 11 at Crisler Arena at 4 p.m. The other game will feature host Michigan against Michigan Tech at 7 p.m. The winners of each game will play on Wed., Nov. 12 at 8 p.m. on ESPNU. The losers of each game will play earlier that day at 5 p.m.

Should Northeastern advance to the semifinals at Madison Square Garden, the Huskies will be paired up with the winner of the Los Angeles Regional, which features UCLA, Weber State, Miami of Ohio and Prairie View A&M. All four games to take place at Madison Square Garden will be televised by ESPN2.

Northeastern, under third-year head coach Bill Coen, returns 11 lettermen, including all five starters, from last season’s 14-17 team that finished sixth in the CAA and reached the CAA Tournament quarterfinals for the third consecutive season. The Huskies bring back second-team All-CAA selection Matt Janning and CAA All-Rookie selection Chaisson Allen.

Game 4: Game 1 winner vs. Game 2 winner, 8 p.m. ESPNU
