In a battle of undefeated crew teams, Harvard knocked off Northeastern in the 16th annual Smith Cup on the Charles River Saturday morning.
Harvard rowed a 6:11.0, easily defeating the Huskies, who came in at 6:25.0. The Crimson handed NU its first loss of the season and its worst regular season regatta loss since losing to Brown by 15 seconds in 2001.
At the start of the race, the two teams were even, but Harvard took over after 750 meters and dominated in the second 1000.
Harvard made it a clean sweep for the day with wins in the second varsity and freshman races. The Crimson won the second varsity 6:34.0 to 7:03.0 and the freshman 6:22.0 to 6:38.0.
It is Harvard's seventh straight Smith Cup victory and now holds the lead in the all-time series, 22-3.
The Huskies will return to the water next Sunday in the Burk Cup against Pennsylvania on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Penn. It will be the team's final regular season regatta before the Eastern Sprints on May 16. The varsity race is at 10 a.m.
