Varsity finishes fourth in Eastern Sprints

The men's crew varsity boat exceeded expectations by finishing fourth in the 2004 EARC Eastern Sprints Sunday afternoon on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.

Harvard won the grand final race easily with a time of 5:42.8., but second place was a dogfight between the Huskies, Princeton, Navy and Wisconsin. Princeton pulled out ahead with a time of 5:47.7, but the four teams finished within 3.3 seconds of each other. NU, seeded fifth going into the day, came in fourth at 5:49.5.

To qualify for the grand final, the Huskies took second in their heat with a time of 5:48.3, a split-second behind Princeton, who won at 5:48.1.

The finish is NU's highest since taking fourth in 2002 and 3rd in 2001, head coach John Pojednic's first season. Last year, the Huskies were upset in their heat and finished seventh.

In other boat action, the freshman boat placed eighth after finishing third in its heat and second in the petite final. The second varsity boat finished 12th after a third place finish in its heat and a sixth place finish in the petite final.

The Huskies will move on now to the IRA Championships, held Thursday, June 3 to Saturday, June 5 on the Cooper River in Camden N.J.
