Northeastern opened the racing season by going 1-1 on the first day of the Redwood Shores Rowing Classic in Redwood City, CA. In the first race, NU suffered a five-second loss to Stanford, but pulled out a four length victory later in the day against Gonzaga.

In the first race, Stanford rowed the Redwood Lagoon 2000 meter course in 5:45.2 to NU’s 5:50.7.

The Huskies went off the start at 44 strokes per minute and were even at the settle. The teams were still even at 500, but NU fell behind by two seats at 1000 meters. The Cardinals opened their lead to one length at 1500 and cruised in for the victory.

In the afternoon, NU led Gonzaga the entire race.

The Huskies finished the course in 6:04.8 to Gonzaga’s 6:15.9.

At the settle, NU was one length ahead, and the team increased its lead as the race continued, leading by two and one-half lengths at the 1000 meter mark.

The Redwood Shores Rowing Classic concludes tomorrow, with the Huskies racing a yet to be determined opponent at 1 p.m. EST. NU was originally schedule to face California, but the Golden Bears pulled out of the regatta.
