Vincent Barletta, a native of Dedham, Mass., has been elected to the Northeastern University Hall of Fame for excellence in the sport of rowing and for his continued support of the Huskies crew program. Barletta, Class of 1993, will be inducted along with six others in formal cermonies at Lombardo’s Restaurant in Randolph, Mass., on April 18.
Barletta rowed the 4 seat in the 1991 crew that won the IRA Regatta and was one of the greatest eights in Northeastern history.
He came to Northeastern after rowing for four years at the Belmont Hill School and was in its eight, which won the Princess Elizabeth Cup at the famed Henley Royal Regatta. He captained the crew as a senior.
As a freshman, Barletta rowed in the 5 seat, and the freshman shell finished with a 3-4 record. That season he was voted the Outstanding Freshman Oarsman.
In his sophomore season, he rowed the 4 seat in the varsity eight. The crew had a winning 4-3 regular regatta season but did not make the finals of the Eastern Sprints or the IRA.
In his junior season, Barletta started at the 4 seat and the team suffered a disappointing shocker, losing the BU race for only the sixth time in 32 rowings by a margin of 0.2 seconds. After a third-place finish at the Potomac Regatta, the Huskies beat Brown in a dual race. That was followed by a stunning half-length win over Harvard.
By the halfway mark of his junior season, the Huskies established Penn as their main competitor. NU defeated the Quakers twice before falling to them by a bow ball, or .27 seconds, at the final match at the Cincinnati Regatta, an open invitational. At the IRA Regatta, Northeastern defeated Penn by 1.9 seconds.
The leadership that Bartletta demonstrated in the remarkable 1991 season earned him the captaincy of the 1992 crew. That boat finished with a 3-3 record. Barletta finished his career with the honor of being selected the team’s Outstanding Varsity Oarsman.
Last year, he was the recipient of the Charlie Smith Award for his many years of dedication to Northeastern crew.
Barletta is currently president of Barletta Construction in Canton and resides in Weston, Mass., with his wife, Laura, and their four children.
Joining Barletta in NU’s Hall of Fame Class of 2008 will be Anders Hoeyem (soccer), Harry Mews (ice hockey), Roger Pierce (track & field), Nikiya Reid (women’s track & field), Brooke Whitney (women’s ice hockey) and Kelly Wilk (field hockey).
