Huskies hunt down best team finish at CAA Championship

The men’s cross country team turned in a fourth-place performance at the CAA Cross Country Championship on Saturday morning at the New Market Battlefield State Historical Park in New Market, Va., marking Northeastern’s best overall finish since joining the conference.
Freshman John Jantz directed the Huskies’ efforts for the second time this season, finishing 25th overall, outlasting 52 other competitors. The Arlington, Mass. native completed the 8K course 26:15.30.
Saturday’s conference championship was the fourth 8K the Huskies have competed in this fall. William and Mary captured its 10th-consecutive men’s conference title while the Tribe’s Brian Sklodowski won the individual crown by clocking a time of 25:06.84. He edged out George Mason’s Everett Hackett by 6.68 seconds, who placed second. The Tribe’s Chris Tyson took third (25:15.02), and teammate Charlie Swartz placed fourth (25:17.39). Delaware’s Chris Borque rounded out the top-5 (25:23.72).
George Mason finished in second place while Delaware took over the third-place post. VCU registered a fifth-place showing while Georgia State, UNC Wilmington and Hofsta closed out the race in sixth, seventh and eighth, in that order.
Northeastern’s first CAA Cross Country Championship came in 2005 when the Huskies placed seventh overall. In 2006, NU earned a ninth-place finish while in 2007 the Huskies closed out the conference race in seventh. Last season, Northeastern was listed in sixth.
Freshman Daniel Grant finished a few steps behind Jantz in 27th place by crossing the line in 26:22.03.
A cluster of Huskies looped the 8K track for 29th, 30th and 31st marks. Senior Ryan Miling registered a clip 26:24.70, sophomore Teddy Vrountas logged a time of 26:28.63 and Bryan Brunelli turned in a measure of 26:31.55.
Senior Brian Kennedy and junior James Pellerano turned in respective times of 27:11.59 for 43rd and 27:19.91 for 45th while rookie Chris Mentas rounded out Northeastern’s eight with a 59th-place finish of28:31.28.
The Huskies return to Franklin Park for the third time this season when Northeastern toes the line at the NCAA Regional Championship on Saturday, Nov. 14.
