Boston, Mass.
The Northeastern University men’s ice hockey team handed out its end-of-season awards Thursday in a ceremony at Matthews Arena. Junior goalie Brad Thiessen took home top honors as Team MVP, and freshman Steve Quailer was named Rookie of the Year.
Rob Rudnick of Huskies Radio served as master of ceremonies, and Northeastern Athletic Director Peter Roby was the featured speaker.
Thiessen earned team MVP honors after a season in which he was a Hobey Baker Hat Trick finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, and was named a first-team All-American, Hockey East Player of the Year and New England Most Valuable Player. He was the only unanimous first-team Hockey East All-Star, and was the Hockey East goaltending champion. He also won his second consecutive Eberly Award as the top goalie in the Beanpot. Thiessen played every minute in net for Northeastern as the team tied the program record for wins, finished second in Hockey East for just the second time, and made its first NCAA tournament appearance since 1994. Thiessen finished the 2008-09 season with a 25-12-4 record, 2.12 goals against average, and a .931 save percentage.
Freshman Steve Quailer was honored with the Ed Arrington Memorial Rookie of the Year award. Quailer led all Northeastern rookies and finished fourth overall on the team in scoring with 25 points on ten goals and 15 assists. He was a Hockey East All-Rookie selection.
Jim Driscoll was presented with the Northeastern University Hockey Veterans’ Unsung Hero Award for the second year in a row. The award recognizes a player for making important contributions to the team that might otherwise go unnoticed. Driscoll played in 39 games and posted an impressive +14 rating from the blue line, while chipping in a goal and five assists.
Mike Hewkin was given the Manager’s Award as the team’s most improved player. The defenseman scored seven points on a goal and six assists in his sophomore season after posting four points on two goals and two assists as a freshman. Hewkin was a key member of a vastly improved Huskies defense which allowed a stingy 2.2 goals per game.
Denis Chisholm was given the Don McKenny Coach’s Award. Chisholm served as an assistant captain, and played in 36 games, tallying five points on a goal and four assists.
Sophomore Wade MacLeod was recognized as the team’s leading scorer, finishing 2008-09 with 35 points on 14 goals and 21 assists. MacLeod was also given the Huskies Radio Award as the team’s most exciting player to watch.
The Friends of NU Hockey Fern Flaman Award for dedication to Northeastern Hockey was presented to Louise Firth and George Campbell, who both have been very involved in the operations of the Friends of NU Hockey organization.
Thiessen also received the DogHouse Fan Favorite Award. The Justin Herriman “Super Fan” Award for the Huskies’ top fan went to Tim Fouche.
