Huskies earn Hockey East academic honors

Rob Rassey and Denis Chisholm headlined 11 Northeastern players that were named to the Hockey East All-Academic team, the conference announced Monday. Rassey and Chisholm were both honored as Hockey East Distinguished Scholars for finishing their careers with a grade-point average above 3.0 in each of their four seasons as Huskies. Joining Rassey and Chisholm on the All-Academic team are Andrew Linard, Greg Costa, Dylan Wiwchar, Mike Binnington, Mike Hewkin, Dan Nycholat, Matt Lipinski, J.P. Maley and Mike McLaughlin.
 
Rassey and Chisholm are the eighth and ninth Northeastern student-athletes all-time to be named a Distinguished Scholar, a list that includes current assistant coach Sebastien Laplante. Rassey, a Business Management and Finance double major, played in 34 games last season with eight goals and four assists. For his career, he has 30 points over 123 games. Chisholm, a Mechanical Engineering major, played in 36 games during the 2008-09 campaign, registering one goal and four assists while anchoring one of the strongest Northeastern defenses in years. He played in 120 games over his four-year career, notching 18 points.
 
Linard, a Psychology major, did not appear in any games this season due to injury but played 54 games for the Huskies over the previous seasons with two goals and six assists.
 
Costa, an Accounting major, was a key centerman for the Huskies in his 39 games. He scored three game-winning goals and was a +5 on the season.
 
Wiwchar, a Physical Therapy major, recorded his first point as a Husky in the 2008-09 season during his three games. Wiwchar has played 15 games for the Huskies in his career.
 
Binnington, who is undecided as to a major, did not appear in any games during the 2008-09 season, serving as the backup to All-American goalie Brad Thiessen.
 
Hewkin, a Finance and Insurance major, appeared in 37 games for the Huskies during his sophomore season with one goal and six assists. He was named Northeastern's Most Improved Player at the year-end banquet.
 
Nycholat, a Business major, was an astounding +11 during the 2008-09 season while playing in 27 games as a defenseman. He had two assists during the season, both coming against Boston College.
 
Lipinski, a Finance major, appeared in one game during his freshman season, the Huskies' 3-1 win over UMass-Lowell on Feb. 28.
 
Maley, a Business and Finance major, played in 20 games as a freshman, scoring one goal and picking up three assists. Maley scored in his first game back from the injury.

McLaughlin, a Physiotherapy major, played in 27 games in his rookie season. He registered six goals and five assists including, six goals and four assists in his final 19 games.
 
Hockey East had a record 94 student athletes placed on the All-Academic team this season, and Northeastern had the fourth most of any team in the conference with 11. Northeastern's two Distinguished Scholars tied for the most of any team. The Huskies finished the 2008-09 season with a 25-12-4 record, their most victories since 1981-82, and their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1994.
