Vermeersch secures first Rookie of the Week award
Oct. 12, 2009
Boston, Mass.
 Garrett Vermeersch
Freshman forward Garrett Vermeersch was named the Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week as announced by the Hockey East office on Monday morning. Vermeersch scored consecutive powerplay goals in Northeastern’s first two contests at Colorado College. The Macomb, Mich. native also secured his first multi-point career performance with an assist in the Huskies’ first victory of the season on Oct. 10, 4-3.
Vermeersch is second on the club with three points (1-2-3) and the only player to have scored on Northeastern’s powerplay thus far.
The Huskies’ rookie is tied for first place in the country with four others skaters with one powerplay goal per game and is one of two freshmen atop the list. Vermeersch is also in a bottleneck with a group of players with one goal per game, good enough for a sixth-place tie in all the land.
Vermeersch is amongst 65 other rookies to have notched at least one point in collegiate hockey’s opening weekend, but the right-handed speedster is in a tie for third with sixth other newcomers, including Jordan Samuels-Thomas (Bowling Green), William Rapuzzi (Colorado College), Chris Brown (Michigan), Steven Seigo (Michigan Tech), Michael Cichy (North Dakota) and Jeremy Welsh (Union).
The Hockey East Rookie of the Week leads all freshmen in Hockey East with 1.50 points per game through two outings and is T-26th in the NCAA. Vermeersch is locked with seven others in Hockey East, overall, for fifth place.
Vermeersch’s award marks Northeastern’s first honor of the 2009-10 season.
The Huskies will show off the newly-renovated Matthews Arena on Fri., Oct. 16 when Northeastern collides with Bentley at 7 p.m. in the home opener.
